If you at all appreciate these personal and philosophical reflections on boardgames, it would mean a lot to me if you would comment, share, and subscribe. I pivoted from academic writing because I wanted to directly engage with the gaming community, so you all are the ones who keep me going.

As a writer, I love how Rodney explains why we can't outsource our core purpose. As a gamer, I love how this taps into a playful spirit that has never been all about efficiency. IMO that's why no capitalist content mill will ever be able to speak to play the way a human can.

Watch It Played@watchitplayed.bsky.social

I want to speak a bit more on this particular tool so I'll end with a video. This could apply to any efficiency you're offered in your creative process. They're not all bad, but if you don't question their effect on you or others, you might unintentionally find yourself somewhere you didn't intend.

I'm still not sure what an "agony aunt" is, but the vibes are all warmth and playfulness for me. I appreciate that they get into the sticky questions around play instead of just profiling games. So, I'd give this a try even if you're burned out on other bg podcasts.

Hey all! For the last 18 months, I’ve somehow managed to put out new material every month. With the new school year starting, I won’t be able to keep up that pace in the coming year. But stay tuned because in a week I’m launching the next new experiment for The Looking Glance!

I did have to cut one of the spacers from the inside insert, which I used to make the dividers in the expansion box. Not a big deal, but it seems easy enough for publishers to plan for this possibility without needing modifications.

You likely already know @amabel.bsky.social for her innovative game designs and sharp video essays, but do you know about her book? Either way, you're in luck because Amabel came by to drop wisdom on Cardboard Ghosts, how #boardgames model and critique systems, and more!

IMO one of the most pressing social issues for contemporary boardgames is how eurogames imagine capitalism. And Worker Placement games are an especially fascinating way to reflect on the labor question.

"Ever since I’d heard that there was a viable starvation strategy in Stone Age, I’ve had a morbid curiosity about it." So, here are my personal and philosophical reflections on feeding my people in #boardgames 🍽️ How do you feel about these games? What games offer interesting twists on the genre?

I had no idea this was happening, but it's very cool to see this collaboration!

Blue Bottle Games, as a policy, does not use generative AI. It's something we've discussed as a team, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately, we decided it was not for us. Recently, while chatting with a colleague, she mentioned it was useful hearing our reasoning. So: Sharing time! 1/12

Kept the steak alive! From "your rarest word is nonstandard" to "your rarest word blabbered," I always get a kick out of nonsense turning into sense. Also my first perfect game! 🎯

There’s no way to exactly quantify how much a writer waffles over a thorny topic, but it's indicative of how much I wrestled with “A Gamer’s History of the US” that so much got left on the cutting room floor. This isn't an unusual ratio for academic writing, but it’s a lot for an opinion piece.

J. Rey Lee@jreylee.bsky.social

Welp, I just posted the longest, weirdest, and by far most political piece I’ve ever written for The Looking Glance. So, here’s “A Gamer’s History of the US,” my thought experiment in using game design to show how our 250-year democratic experiment went wrong. #boardgames

Not a fan of silly start player rules in general, but this one may be my favorite. It changes game to game, is genuinely thematic (much more so than having visited a particular place), and is a cute way of making a legitimate public health announcement. #boardgames #forbiddenisland

Unsettling Catan is an excellent study that builds a substantive cultural critique from a touchstone in the boardgame world that extends to other eurogames and beyond. I benefitted from reading Professor Lee’s work and recommend Unsettling Catan without reservation. #booksky @uofmpress.bsky.social

This is a topic that's near & dear to my heart - these are the regs I built my legal career around. Please take a moment to say you oppose politics in science & political meddling in government grants.

There is still time to submit your comment and tell the government that you don't want US research to be completely destroyed by politicians meddling in individual grants. You can submit your comments here: www.regulations.gov/commenton/OM...

I get that it's easy to just put a fresh coat of paint on standard rides, but LEGO offers such a distinctive play experience that I was hoping to feel more of that reflected in the park design.

It’s true that they do engage with LEGO by having neat displays of LEGO sculptures and areas where you can just build with loose bricks. But these moments of spectating and building didn't make the rest of the experience feel very LEGO-like to me.

Beyond the larger LEGO theme, there were areas that had different flavors corresponding to different LEGO “themes”, but I felt like this meant more “narrative” or “setting” than actual theme.

I hadn’t been to one in decades, but I was just at LEGOLAND and I saw an awful lot of standard carnival rides with plastic studs on top. Almost no integration of mechanisms and theme. Very few rides or attractions explore creativity, building, modularity, or anything that makes LEGO what it is.

An important call to broaden “games” journalism to focus on “play” instead. “Games” draws lines and leads to inside-the-box thinking “Play” crosses lines and leads to outside-the-box thinking

New video! Last month I was invited to Spain's Guadalindie game convention to do a talk of my choice. I ended up giving an angry polemic about how the culture of games is failing designers left and right, because there is no games industry. There's just "play" www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4Xm...

For instance, I distinguish how videogames leverage the "gaze" from how boardgames leverage what I call the "glance." And my book on LEGO tried to articulate a media-specific theory of LEGO that showed that not all toys script children's play in the same ways.

But while some degree of media specificity is needed to do games (or play) scholarship, I love to see Quinns measure success in terms of breaking new, meaningful stories rather than sales. That's what I want journalism (of anything) to care about.

I would like to write more broadly on play in the future, but I do find some value in sticking specifically with boardgames for now. I never want to gatekeep what counts as a boardgame, but I do theorize the medium in specific ways that can't always be reduced to "it's all just play."
