Nom du plums for Cornish writer Alec McQuay - currently horror, humour, and both. He/him, hefty lefty, ADHD, mental illness, anti-hate in all its forms. I have trans family members so don't even try it.

HOLY MOLY I'm in the Observer!!!!!!!!!!

By me for today's @theobserveruk.bsky.social: Why horror fiction is having a moment, with @gnofhorror.com, @lucyrosecreates.bsky.social, @jamieleenardone.bsky.social observer.co.uk/culture/book...

Well, I thought Crystal Lake was brilliant. Who would have thought that dear child would grow up to go to space and beat a sleeping-bagged holographic woman against a tree? Those bullies have a lot to answer for. If they wasn't all dead n that.

Going to treat myself to a little fun with the wingnuts claiming that the new Mass Effect would be woke and there were only two genders in the original games. Guarantee absolutely every single one of them fucked Liara.

Ever sit and feel like the life you actually want is somewhere else, doing something else, and all you're doing is haemorrhaging time? It's been that kind of year. The foundations of my world are based on a plan I made in another life, and that life is all gone. Now, I'm questioning EVERYTHING.

Don't be fooled. This is the face of a demon. A demon who has worked out that if you look away while you're scratching his back and he rolls over you're going to at least briefly find yourself scratching his dick. This would explain why he always looks like he's smiling. (His name is Ozymandias)

Wonder how long it'll be until EA starts pumping out vibe coded updates of their already quite spectacularly shit sports games, interspersed with "big" releases that are also just vibe coded monstrosities made from the carcasses of the IP they now own.

So I'm trying to learn to network and perhaps make a new friend or two via Bluesky but I am very out of practice. I'd appreciate a bit of patience with me being a little shit at this but if I'm annoying anyone or am unwelcome please, just tell me. No tantrums, no ranting, I'd just rather know.

I appreciate that's a weird thing for a man in his forties to say but I do have my reasons. Years of having my closest friendships scuppered by others and misguidedly destroying a good few myself have left me a bit crap at being a normal person. Either I learn, or I just get weirder and lonelier.

Bioware coming to an end feels like yet another cruel step on the path to the enshittification of everything, with uber rich ghouls putting 400 of the industry's actually talented people out on their arses. The journey through the Mass Effect universe was a huge favourite. Fuck you EA. Fuck you.

Sat alone all Billy no-mates again this evening and wondering if @netflix.com have ever considered putting as much effort into promoting their shows as they do into trying to get me to watch the ones they've already cancelled.

Having to grab bits of writing time is a pain, but I find making the last line a snapshot of what I was thinking makes it a lot easier to pick things back up later. "Well I'd better explain my cunning plan and definitely not leave out the bit about grenade bananas" is easier than half a sentence I -

This is the first in a new series I like to call "random stuff I found out while I was writing." Stuff 1 - dogs shouldn't drink cat milk. The balance of fat and protein is way too much for their systems and the results can be NASTY. Diarrhoea. Vomiting. Gas. Pain. Lethargy. Even pancreatitis.

In Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021), Ezra Miller’s character is able to break a plane of glass despite barely touching it. This is because Windows stopped supporting Flash the previous year.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

This is a new one - I'm struggling to listen to an ebook because I find the author's voice too soothing. I'm enjoying the story itself a great deal but I keep zoning out and having to rewind great chunks of it because her voice makes my brain go really, really quiet. #audiobooks #reading #scifi

This was a fun one to do so I'd encourage others to have a go - and on that subject I love doing things like this, so if anybody is after some daft captions, thoughtful paragraphs, a whole spiel about something in genre fic or a vaguely amusing but non-toxic rant (remember them?) hit me on up.

There is still time to take part in this. Full details are in the alt text for the photo, along with the questions, so you can copy them and answer them.

Trying to get a person wrongfully deported should be a crime in and of itself.

NEW: ICE is trying to deport a mother of 4 while her husband is at Fort Benning in Army basic training. When she went to pick up the family's military IDs, Navy personnel turned her over to ICE. She's been in the US since age six. With @nancyayoussef.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

This is a profoundly cruel and honestly fucking stupid development. By allowing "I don't believe in you" against one minority group you're allowing it against all, eventually, which was always the point. Next step is "I shouldn't have to share with gays because I don't believe it's natural." FFS.

Civil servant transgender guidelines leak just dropped:

And all of this to combat a thing that it "stands to reason" would happen if trans women used women's facilities and yet which doesn't fucking happen. Male rapists dressing as women also doesn't make sense in terms of the power dynamics involved in such sex crimes... It's absolute horse shit.

The Springfield nuclear power plant is to shut down this week due to major oversights by Mr Smithers. Blaming his habit of taking long walks on his employer's habit of playing the violin while he was trying to work, he stands accused of roaming while Burns fiddled.

Well, Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey was great. Criticism - There was absolutely no point in that movie where Winnie was about to be hurt and said "oh, bother" and likewise no "oh d-d-d-dear" from Piglet. Which is probably a legal thing but still.

So, I did the difficult thing. One of the most difficult things I have ever had to do and the first time I've ever felt task paralysis like an active physical force pushing me back. But, it's done. Fuck you, thingy. Fuck. You.

Old habits are really hard to break and masking is probably the most pervasive of them all. It's like a form of amnesia where I know who everyone else is, but not myself. It's liberating though. Trying to be who my wife and parents say I am. Trying not to be the person certain others say I am.

I know it sounds weird. I wrote it and I know I sound like your mate from college who burnt through an eighth in an hour and is certain he's worked out a new, universally beneficial economic paradigm. Mix late diagnosed ADHD and PTSD, this is what you get. Might as well make the best of it.

Always worth a reminder of the bit the fanboys miss - the tech wazzocks don't give a shit about the climate change or other people's lives being made crapper in their quest for more money because they can just nip off somewhere nice, secluded, safe etc, so it doesn't impact them personally.

Having a full-blown crisis of confidence today and given I have something to do that's proving to be a major trauma trigger that's not exactly ideal... Oh, bother.

In my quest to be a more positive online presence I submit the nicest thing to happen to me this last week - holding hands with my cat, Misty. She is a very strange cat. Not a fancy breed, just a plain old tabby, but BIG. And weird. Muscular. Claws like thorns. Loves belly rubs. Does... This.

Writing one of my favourite kinds of characters, based on one of my favourite kinds of people. Formidable older women. Have met many over the years and it's always fun to bring one into my work.

If you're a creative with a day job, do you ever feel like you're adrift? Just going through the motions like a cog, doing what you're needed to do, but never actually getting to be you? Whoever the hell you actually are? #amwriting #writersofbluesky #writerthoughts

Jason Mantzoukas was INCREDIBLE on Taskmaster. I'd like them to get Jason Sudeikis on some time. Possibly Momoa. Then Segel. Biggs. Bateman. The UK can supply Statham, Isaacs, and Flemyng. @taskmaster.tv - Give me your huddled Jasons.

He was hilarious because he just came in and Tasmanian Devil'ed everything.

Business idea. Live-streamed Battle Royale, weapons allowed, but it is filmed in Lidl and you can only use what you find in the middle aisle.
