Another interesting discussion this week was on medical emergencies. Our thinking on these has to change a bit. If a crew member has a medical issue in the habitat, waiting to treat it til we get them back to Earth may not be the right answer.

But what capabilities are reasonable to have in our early incarnation? What are the most likely events? If a crew member breaks a leg out on the surface, do we want to take the suit off because we’re going to have to put it on to get them home.

Again, we’re in the asking questions phase. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV; I’m just the integrater who has to figure out how do we get from here to having answers.

This morning I led a discussion on lunar surface preparation for placement of the habitat complex. It’s one of the bigger unknowns we have that’ll impact the design of several systems. The less we know, the more conservative & more robust (i.e. more massive) our designs will need to be.

This was all in the heels of a week long design concept discussion for a node module during which we come up with concepts for different mass targets, trying to see what capabilities would be ideal and what you have to sacrifice to come in at lower masses.

It’s preferable to not have every module need the bigger planned landers, but can you live without some of the needed capabilities.

The ultimate site prep would be to put down some kind of foundation, which would make the design of leg systems, mating systems, and leveling the simplest and least massive. Could we 3D print one? Could we sinter the surface? MSFC been studying that for decades.

The hard part is can we get answers to these while we still have time to impact the design? Or can we use simulated regolith to recreate the harsher conditions? Today was just about identifying the questions. That was the easy part. Hard part is figuring out answers.

Can we grade the surface at all? We need a slope of less than 3 degrees for human habitation and being able to level the surface to an extent would open up the site selection trade space a little.

If we can’t grade it, can we at least have a river to remove larger rocks? Wouldn’t want to hit a boulder when we try and position these big honkin’ modules right next to each other and damage a seal or a camera.

Some questions are straightforward- can we do a site survey? We’d like to find a spot free of big boulders where local variations from craters or other features can be compensated for?

Others are more complicated- Can we do subsurface scans to identify pockets of less dense regolith that might compact a lot when we place a 15-ton habitat on top of it.

Just want to point out that the Flyers are 2-0 since I posted this. Glad they were suitably embarrassed.

Will be nice to like something in orange and black that doesn’t suck.

Youngest is taking her first solo flight to spend a long weekend with her sister in NC. She’s very nervous about traveling solo. Tried to relax her nerves by pointing out that lots of idiots successfully travel by air every day and she’s not an idiot.

Working on DJ-R3X, who will be the centerpiece of the big addition to this year’s yard decorations if I can get him finished in time.

He’ll eventually have 3 turntables to rotate and position his arms. Once he’s done, I’ll put together a DJ stand for him. Already bought some light up speakers, multi-colored spotlights, and an FM transmitter. This might be the things that finally gets me a cease & desist letter from the HOA.

Not where I expected to pop up today. Had the pleasure of going to LIX with Nicole with a mutual friend. 6 months later, my wife started her own cancer journey. Congrats to Nicole on her survivor story. Get checked folks; it’ll save your life. www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/eagles-...

My memory was off. LIX was after my wife knew she had cancer. A few weeks after this she had her mastectomy. I remember because Nicole and I discussed it at a restaurant just before the game. Feels like a lifetime ago.

I’ve now been to London games for both the Phillies & Eagles. Gotta say, MLB did it better. MLB celebrated both teams, had Philly & NY food trucks around the stadium & had more of a festival feel outside the stadium. The NFL just tried to make it a Jags home game & the Fan Experience was kinda sad

Gonna acknowledge how incredibly privileged I’ve been being able to go to these. It’s wild for me given that my first trip out of the US for fun, that I paid for, was 5 years ago.

My favorite memory from the Phils game was the trash can full of confiscated plastic beer bats that had at airport security from all the fans that tried to take them home in their carry on.

One of my favorite moments from yesterday was when the Jags mascot seemed to acknowledge reality and stopped trying to pump up the crowd to make some noise with the Jags on defense.

The best news of the day is that she’s written an adaptation of Jekyll & Hyde that’s being produced for London Fringe. That’s the real dream for her.

In a change of pace for me, my oldest showed me around her work today. My favorite is the gravestone prop with the continuity error.

If you see a guy walking around London in an Orion jacket the next few days, he might have some Artemis II and NASA patches and stickers to give away. Then again, he might just be some random guy. Gonna have to take a risk.

Whenever I see the ad for watching the NFL on mobile, my first thought is why did you put yourself in that position? Amateur hour. How did you not plan ahead?
