UNIT 15 Operated By citizen scientist Donna L captured a quiet overhead band forming evenly spaced rays (curls/turbulent areas) that evolve in to a more active chaotic arc. Maybe similar to fluids transitioning from laminar flow to turbulent flow as velocity or pressure increase?

auroreye #15 next to an auroreye mini. The sensor on the bigger cam 16 times the area shooting at around 1/3 the exposure time, so in total about 2.5 stops better SNR for an image, all others things being equal

Shrinking the AurorEye Printed PETG chassis. Using 10mm walls spaced with minimal infill to act as thermal insulator. Battery is above electronics to allow convection of heated air upwards, exiting through ring around lens

Had a great time presenting the AurorEye project by Jeremy Kuzub here at #AGU24! Want more info? I’ll be presenting another poster on Thursday, so find me there, or visit AurorEye.ca and sign up for the email newsletter! #heliophysics ☀️

The aurora were hardly visible that night but the galaxy was right overhead allowing this panorama. The thing I liked most was talking to a person who did this in their youth in 1957, and sent me some of his notebook sheets from that time. Aurora logs from 65 years ago. The article was about those

We used to end up in California often and this was my favourite photo of one of the sequoias, because the road circled around it creating amazing motion blur. There seems to be no correlation between planning photos and favourite photos. They just sort of appear on a memory card and really jump out

don’t know why I was making fountain pen ink and grinding custom nibs for a while but now I know my favorite grind is called a right foot oblique italic and I can make it with a $4 pen and a bit of care. Mixing inks to get a new color is also mesmerizing. We are a very visual and tactile animal.

A physicist on YouTube said we move through time at the speed of light. Which is insane but also makes a lot of sense. Backfilling this new account with silly stuff was fun and brought back some memories. I can see why they can seem like another life, because they kind of were

A long time ago on my last day at Shopify, I carved the kitchen staff an owl. They made the most amazing lunches for us. It was a singular time and maybe work environments like that won’t happen again.

I don’t understand how time can go by in little bits but then be so far away. The primary reason to share things on feeds like this is to share them with yourself later on. The person that will benefit most from the perspective is you

This lighthouse keeper has people showing up to take photos with of the lighthouse, but never of him and the lighthouse, so as is tradition, I took a photo and sent it to him. That was a nice night and the aurora and tide pools were a fun combination.

I only buy Starbucks at airports. My sister gets me a Starbucks card annually for Christmas and I send her a photo of the coffee wherever it might be. Where was this one? Darn I’ll have to check the photo metadata.

Jen once got me a paddle in Vermont and it makes it’s been to a lot of hikes because there is no way I’m leaving it in the canoe unattended. Funny that there are aluminum canoes but not aluminum paddles.

I learned a lot about ice carving over the years. I never like these big sculptures because of f the lack f sleep. But at least we finished. It’s easier to do it in clay first and going from 2D to 3D is really a skill that eludes me mostly

A long time ago I used to fix runway lights as a volunteer. They used to get damaged mostly when snowplows hit them and fixing them sometimes had to wait till spring. They featured Frangible Couplings which is a word I just remembered. Those couplings definitely Franged.

Phone cameras smear out detail but it is nice to meet people during photography. Aurora as far south as this beach are very rare so it was special to see and nice to share, it’s like the difference between sports on tv and sport in person; it’s better as a shared experience sometimes
