Two years ago, I launched Proof News with the hypothesis that readers would appreciate seeing the 'ingredients' in their news articles. This year, we spent the summer testing our labels with nearly 4,000 news consumers -- and were very happy to learn that labels *did* work to increase trust!

What if your news diet came with nutrition labels? @JuliaAngwin and the @ProofNews team tested what happens when news videos cite their sources and use other transparency labels. Turns out, showing your work is a fast way to increase viewer trust.

The most surprising finding was that labels worked *better* on short-form video than on text news articles. We were skeptical that viewers would pause to read a label placed in credits or in metadata. But they did! Our report in @niemanlab.org: www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/crea...

Thanks to @lawyeroyer.com for joining me on @strictscrutiny.bsky.social - and to @juliaangwin.com & @fieldsmeyer.com for the great conversation about their fantastic new book “On Courage”

In an authoritarian regime, journalists who tell the truth are already dissidents. My interview with the great @parkermolloy.com about the importance of truth-telling and how we need to defend and support independent media.

Long Lead@longlead.com

Proof News founder @juliaangwin.com's new book takes readers inside the world of being a dissident and standing up against authoritarian regimes. When asked by DEPTH PERCEPTION if a working journalist can be a dissident, Angwin shared, "if we're in the business of telling the truth, we are in that."

What does courage look like when telling the truth comes with real consequences? @proofnews.bsky.social founder @juliaangwin.com has spent her career investigating powerful institutions. Now she's turned her lens onto standing up to authoritarian regimes and speaking truth to power.

Resistance looks like this. It’s not just showing up to protest marches. It’s also forcing institutions to suffer consequences for complying with a regime’s lawlessness and corruption. Every bit of sand in the gears makes a difference.

@fieldsmeyer.com and I spent our $$ and raised a bit of $$ to make this happen. As we write in the book, you can’t fight authoritarianism just by doomscrolling. So we are coming out to meet as many of you as we can. Can’t wait to meet and be inspired by you all!

* also, yes I know that San Francisco is misspelled in the graphic. Apologies to my hometown! This is what happens when you are bootstrapping everything.

On Courage book tour has begun!! Dates and locations below. I’ll also share links prior to each event, but wanted to list the whole schedule for anyone interested.

One thing to note: this tour is self funded. Publishers believe (possibly correctly) that national media sells books more than local IRL events. But we couldn’t write a book about the importance of building community without talking to people IRL. So we bootstrapped.

It’s such a treat to be interviewed by someone who has closely read the book and engaged with it. And a delight to draw a crowd — I still remember one bookstore event for my first book where only one person showed up 😢 Thank you @portersqbooks.bsky.social!

I really loved this @juliaangwin.com. The AI industry's investment in authoritarianism is so clear: their algorithms censor what we see, disappearing records & events they don't want us to see. Doublespeak and surveillance are at the core of the totalitarianism in Orwell's 1984.
