It’s a beautiful day to Vote Early in California! ✅ Yes on 40 to support health ❤️‍🩹 ✅ Yes on Alameda County RTM 🚊 ✅ Yes on Berkeley AA 🥗 ❌ No on 41 & 42 that would block wealth taxes 💰

BART is loud because the doors don't fit correctly. This was THE headline feature of "fleet of the future" and I would trust BART more if there had been a visible public reckoning over this failure to deliver promised improvements.

The biggest public promise was the new cars would be quiet because the doors fit better, but the doors fit worse and the trains are louder as a result, and every one of them was accepted from the contractor regardless.

How do you get on the internet and say that government salaries are outrageous when you just spent $3 million on you 7-bedroom house?

Jeff Baker@jwbee.bsky.social

These guys cannot stop telling on themselves. Latest one says their taxes went up 12% ... they live in a 7800-square-foot house.

Every individual complaining about their tax bills on Berkeley Nextdoor is living in a home over 3000 square feet.

There is a candidate for local office in Berkeley who refuses to disclose their campaign expenses. And they've changed treasurer three times, currently to a treasurer with no address, phone, or email. @estupido.fyi rate this campaign 1-10

Hey my town has an Oxford Street. Let's go.

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

In addition to two fascists losing elections in Serbia and Brazil yesterday, Oxford Street in London was closed to vehicular traffic and transformed into a pedestrian zone. 🥳

I assume the Lula victory party, Berkeley chapter, is in the street in front of Shellenberger's house.

Jeff Baker@jwbee.bsky.social

What's it like being Michael Shellenberger? Elon Musk tweets that some country is oppressing him, then Shellenberger flies there to defend him, by tweeting? Brazil, Ireland, everywhere? How does this life make sense? How does he explain this behavior to people he meets at parties?

Development and transportation policy in Berkeley has been largely dictated for the last 55 years by people who inherited their homes and have never had real jobs. Incredibly they are still one side of the 2026 local election campaign. If you have a job and pay rent, vote accordingly.

The Rent Stabilization Board of Berkeley practices a self-sustaining cycle of campaign contributions from individuals with a direct financial stake in contracts let out by the Board itself, to candidates for the Board. This is illegal in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, but not Berkeley 🧵

When the EBCLC contract was last renewed, six of the votes in favor came from Board members who had taken contributions from Janowitz.

In other cities this is recognized as corruption, and it is illegal. SF on the left, LA on the right. Anyway if you read this thread now you know what "non-profit industrial complex" means. 🎬

East Bay Community Law Center employs Marc Janowitz who has variously described themselves as a volunteer, the director, staff attorney, consulting attorney, and senior attorney. They have drawn a salary from EBCLC at least since 2021.

Janowitz served on the Rent Board until 2002 and approved the initial contracts for EBCLC and EDC. They donated to the campaigns for Rent Board 2in 012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 (Tregub, Dodsworth, Soto-Vigil, Murphy, Simon-Weisberg, Kelley, Mendonca, Walker, Johnson, Elgstrand, Twu, Arbaugh).

Eviction Defense Center had $300k revenue in 2010 but after Measure U1 passed in Berkeley the EDC's revenues exploded to $2.3 million. Part of these revenues comes via the Rent Board from city general fund transfers, and part comes from the Rent Board's own revenues.

The executive director of EDC is Anne Omura. Their compensation increased from $19k in 2010 to $176k in 2023. Omura has previously donated to the campaigns of Leah Simon-Weisberg and Mari Mendonca, and recently funded the slate of three candidates to the Board.

Every year, the Rent Board lets out contracts for outside legal services. Last year the Board voted unanimously to extend contracts with Eviction Defense Center and East Bay Community Law Center for a total of $850k. In the last 5 fiscal years, these contracts cost $3.7 million.

The fact that the community access cable station in Berkeley has a seven-figure budget, and that is funded by line items on cable TV bills, is the most Boomer-coded thing I have stumbled across recently.

Either general artificial intelligence is upon us, or the frontier model I pay $200/mo to use writes syntactically invalid python programs every single time. Literally 1000s of times in a row.

This late Richmond train would be A LOT less problematic if it had ten cars, not five. Every rush hour train needs ten cars. You can't plan for every car to be crush loaded because any little problem becomes a big problem.

The fact that I can leave my agent running at home and control it remotely in my web browser while I ride around on buses is really revolutionizing my side projects.

It's reminding me somewhat of how I got my first job ... I was fooling around with my PC in Texas from a seat in San Francisco and someone noticed Xvnc and excitedly shouted "HE'S GOT XTERMS IN NETSCAPE!" and they thought I was some kind of witch.

It's ridiculous that a government will use Granicus to host meeting videos—or should I say allegedly host them, since Granicus is not able to serve them back up—instead of just using YouTube which has never even once failed to regurgitate a video regardless of length or popularity.

This is just one of the infinite features on the surface of the fractal which describes the ways in which Emeryville is better-governed than Berkeley.

Pretty bummed lately. Can't explain. The eternal struggle is demoralizing even if you get some little victories here and there.

Xavier Becerra proof of life.

BART@bart.gov

On Monday, Secretary Xavier Becerra joined Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), BART Director Barnali Ghosh and BART General Manager Bob Powers for a tour of 70 affordable apartments under construction at the El Cerrito Plaza BART Station.

Ordered coffee at a not-coffee place that had an espresso machine. Guy put the shot on, turned around and forgot about it. 5+ minutes later, close to a pint of espresso-like effluent in the pitcher. He just finds a bigger cup into which to pour it 😂

Every time I learn about a Mills Act tax exemption in Berkeley I become incandescent with civic rage. $37k per year subsidy to this 7,700-square-foot mansion that occupies 4 parcels.

You guys ever consider stealing the Prius the doordash guy leaves double-parked and running? Just for like a block or two. No jury will convict, surely.

Who will stop the "Berkeley Tenants Union" from defacing public property? @alfredtwu.com you are reportedly a member of this organization's steering committee. Why do you deface and vandalize parks every election year? I try to be allied by EVERY year it's "haha F U we are jerks" from BTU.

Panoche Valley Solar is the standout example of everything corrupt about CEQA. This San Francisco couple was part of the opposition, filing a letter against the project in the grounds of the endangered rats. They gave a Panoche address, but nothing existed there at the time. Pure hypocrisy.

Jeff Baker@jwbee.bsky.social

I voted against Prop 45 but I still want legislative CEQA reforms. I am still mad about the 420MW solar power plant that got downsized to 130MW after being sued by the Sierra Club on behalf of a lot of rich San Francisco people with vacation retreats and hobby ranches. CEQA was the problem here.

You need an EIR for your filthy renewable energy, but my weekend home to which I drive from San Francisco, which also happens to have ground-mounted solar panels, just fewer of them, is perfectly fine.
