I'm launching a newsletter! Observation Deck (real ones know) is home to my thoughts about all sorts of nerdy pop culture and entertainment journalism. My first blog is about the new Ghost in the Shell, and how its reverence for the original manga lets it play with some boundary-breaking ideas.

observationdeck.ghost.ioThe Digital Boundaries of the New 'Ghost in the Shell'Science Saru's spin on 'Ghost in the Shell' goes straight back to the manga—and celebrates the digital borders it frequently crosses.

The collective outpouring of what Mass Effect Universe could've been in the last few days feels like being Vigil on Ilos and watching the cryopods blink out one by one

Picking back up with Korra book 3 and I forgot how great the Zaofu arc is with Lin and Su. Making a character as popular as Toph into a catalyst for literal generations of strife is such a great, albeit riskily imperfect, arc for her to go on

Really not getting the 'Don't play FF Resonance if you've not played every FF game because the visions spoil them' discourse because it's just kind of like, 30 seconds of contextless video clips from a 100 hour game from the SNES and at some point I feel like that's just not a thing to care about

it's funny because the resonance questions they ask you are things like 'a significant person in cloud's life died, how would you handle that situation' so it's an if you know, you know thing (for the most famous death in games) but if you don't know it's just oh no a character in a JRPG died???

Love the contrast that when you saw Aang in Korra, he was inevitably doing cool stuff, but when we see Korra in Seven Havens it's just nonstop trauma She really was the Avatar Built to Suffer

Little late on today's newsletter, but I marked the untimely closure of Bioware with a trip back through moments in my life that will forever be associated with their games—14 flashes of memory, from Baldur's Gate to Mass Effect: Universe. A damn good ride. The best, even.

observationdeck.ghost.ioMy Life, As Told By Bioware GamesBioware spent over three decades making games before EA shuttered it—taking up a significant chunk of my own life in the process.

For the first time in years I've felt sympathetic to Geoff Keighley, because when haven't we all crashed out so hard we just start posting pictures of Liara T'Soni

This week's episodes of VisionQuest were really good, and yet at the same time I'm kind of just waiting for the shoe to drop in that usual "back end of a Marvel TV show" way. Nice to see president roslin again, though.

Bioware was one of the most fundamental game studios of my life, from watching my brother play the original Baldur's Gate for hundreds of hours, to Knights of the Old Republic rewiring my brain, to Mass Effect letting me explore my queerness, to Dragon Age II being the best game ever. Fuck, man.

Do we think Amazon dot com has enough confidence next season to have Sauron be a disembodied spirit in armor instead of Charlie Vickers in sexy elf ears, or do they still want to court the haladriel shippers

I know J.K. Simmons has had a very illustrious career of being great in everything, but its hard to overstate how extremely good he is as Tenzin in Legend of Korra. He managed to balance pathos and regularly being the butt of the joke so well, and is such a treat in basically every scene he's in.

(My Korra rewatch has hit the middle of season 2, which I know is the season most people dislike, but I can never hate, mostly for the Bumi/Kya/Tenzin side stuff and also Aubrey Plaza as Bolin's unhinged jilted waterbender princess girlfriend, Eska)

Congratulations to Korra and Asami on their first on screen kiss

Seven Havens continues to be great, although they have a baffling habit of showing off the clunkiest bits of its animation off as previews when the rest of the episodes look pretty good Kinda crazy we're already halfway through book one though, three episodes a week is too much

Today's newsletter is mostly an excuse to waffle on about the crossroads Warcraft currently finds itself in—an attempted return to the classic heyday of the series versus an embrace of its modern form, and all the baggage that entails—through the lens of two recent acts of narrative sacrifice.

observationdeck.ghost.ioTwo Very Different 'Warcraft' DeathsComparing and contrasting two recent sacrifices in Azeroth speaks to a wayward direction for the contemporary 'World of Warcraft.'

Man, Lin motherfucking Beifong

Been rewatching Korra waiting for the next Seven Havens and it's kind of wild that the pro-bending tournament–one of the coolest world building ideas in S1–is wrapped up in the season's worst (the Mako/Korra/Bolin love triangle) and best (the start of the Equalist revolution in earnest) episodes

On the one hand, I don't think you need to balance so much fun out of a single player experience with modular difficulties, but on the other this *was* pretty ridiculous as a thing you could pull off on a regular basis

Reached a point in Zero Company where it's all but possible for me to share pictures and videos without it being a spoiler, but I *can* share Cly being broken as all fuck
