Skarsgård's Wicker Husband is a terrific character. Like a gentle giant. The reactions of the villagers to him are both hilarious and sympathetic. Colman's Fisherwoman is more cunning than she lets on. Peter Dinklage enjoys chewing the scenery. Richard E. Grant has a brief but hilarious cameo.

This was very much an adult fairy tale. Also distinctly European. Lots of moody scenery and disquieting folk music lending it a slightly sinister edge. Plus a dark sense of humour. Also I really liked the credits/title cards. They had a vintage and distinctive stylization. Really enjoyed this one!

Really enjoyed this one! The trailers made it seem like a romantic comedy erotica, but those elements sort of take a backseat to the fairy tale-style drama. And I don't mean cutesy fairy tale, I mean the Brothers Grimm style. Not that extreme, but definitely a 'what goes around' kind of thing.

I really like films made in the pre-digital era that would try to be realistic with their costuming and sets, giving it a feeling of versimilitude. Whether historically accurate or not, there's still a sense of 'this could've really happened' to the events. I don't feel that way about modern films.

The chief issue of the film, about how a corrupted state overlooks rules and decency in its quest for power and domination, changing them on the fly if it suits their whims, rings true today. Perhaps truer than it did in 1971. It's the feel good movie of the year! 😆

I'd seen this before, on Shudder in standard def, so seeing it in pristine quality was a treat. This movie is of course infamous for being heavily edited and essentially banned for decades. Sure you could see it, but home video and streaming releases were extremely rare.

The fact this got a restored director's cut AND a theatrical release is pretty shocking. I will say that the content of the movie isn't as shocking to modern audiences as it was back in the day. I kept waiting for the infamous 'femur scene' and was more amused than appalled by it (but I'm weird lol)
