I actually find ChatGPT 4.5 a little too casual in the way it responds, especially when a new chat is initiated. It usually starts its message with something like “Hey Kai! …” which makes me feel like I’m making it go out of its way to respond back

Tools, not rules--and you don't get better at using a tool by leaving it in the box all the time. Genius not needed. Not desirable, in fact, fuck the idea of genius. Just write the thing you want as well as you can, then do it again and try to be better at it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I used to be a huge Notion fan, even considered myself a "power user" in the beginning. Lately though (really, for the last three years) I've found myself using Notion less and less and have completely migrated over to Obsidian as my daily note system.

Over time Notion became very bloated with new bells and whistles and the apps were frustratingly slow. I miss when it was just a simple interface that let you write and collect information quickly. I absolutely love Obsidian for this reason. It's lightweight, minimal and blazingly fast 🔥

That isn't to say though that I "dislike" Notion! I still keep an eye on their news and developments, and I think they're a cool company and have a great product. I just think more focus needs to go towards the user experience and performance of the apps.

Not the first thing that most of us reach for, but I actually really enjoy writing documentation. I think it’s just as important, if not more so than the code itself. It’s surprising how much you can take away when you have to step outside of your head to explain things for other devs to grok.

And don’t be afraid to imitate others! There are tons of great resources out there to glean ideas in writing style and organization. I’m sure you use some of these on a regular basis too. CodeIgniter was my first exposure to what great documentation could be.

There have been so many instances where, as I’m writing and running through things I find ways to improve or simplify the APIs themselves. If I’m finding it difficult to show or describe how to get started or use something, then I think about how much more difficult it will be for others.

It doesn’t have to be “fancy” either. Just start with a README and go from there. Over time as you write more you’ll begin to find a style and approach to how you’d like to organize things at a larger scale 💪

Just binge-watched all of Pantheon on Netflix. Such a good series. Happy to see more stories being told covering concepts such as uploaded intelligence and full brain emulation. So many questions and debates could be had on the topic. SOMA is another great recommendation, one of my favorite games.

man, I never knew how much toggling night shift to turn on automatically at sunset would make reading on the iPad this enjoyable. Currently reading through Shogun but thinking of starting the Witcher series next, which I started previously just never finished.

You are up to date.
