New study 🧬 Inbreeding depression is a concern in small populations, and evaluating its genomic proxies is important for #ConservationGenomics. In hihi, genome-wide homozygosity best predicts lifetime reproductive success, compared to genetic load and FROH. Publication: doi.org/10.1111/eva.... 1/3

doi.orgGenome‐Wide Homozygosity Predicts Inbreeding Depression in the Hihi/Stitchbird (Notiomystis cincta) Better Than Realised LoadPopulation declines result in increasingly small populations, which often experience an increase in inbreeding. Inbreeding may be negatively associated with fitness traits like survival and reproduct...

A starling with a yellow front (thanks to NZ flax pollen) made it to the blue front of Molecular Ecology journal. This beautiful shot by Dominic Scott advertises a paper, that peeped into history of invasive starlings in NZ (and, spoiler-alert, Australia too). #biologicalinvasions

New Zealand’s invasive starlings on the cover of Molecular Ecology! 🐦🧬 This collaborative project unpacks the invasion history of starlings in Aotearoa New Zealand, combining population genomics with historical records of human-mediated translocations. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

View full thread

We found: 1️⃣The native range was demographically stable before introductions. 2️⃣Starlings move and mix freely across NZ’s South Island and lower North Island. 3️⃣But Auckland birds stand out! Their unique genetics suggest a mysterious, unrecorded introduction. We then looked at historical articles📰...

4️⃣Using historic archives we pinpoint which translocation events were most successful and use historical accounts to interpret the shared genetic signals seen across Australia and New Zealand. Genomics 🧬 and history 🗞️ together reveal invasion dynamics that neither could fully explain alone.

Recombination has a major role in evolution. Sex-differences in recombination (yes!!) – heterochiasmy – are common but not well understood. Our new paper in @HeredityJournal examines heterochiasmy in the hihi/stitchbird using a high-density linkage map.🧬 doi.org/10.1038/s414...
