People keep pointing out how bad 1976 was in response to this but like,,, in 1926 only half of Americans had running water. There was no cure or prevention for polio. On the political end, no FDIC, no SSA, Jim Crow was in full swing, etc

I feel like one of the issues with economic malaise is pretty clearly the fact that if you look at 1826 -> 1876 -> 1926 -> 1976 -> 2026, every one of these 50 year periods saw a massive, qualitative, jump in quality of life, except the last one

I feel like people underestimate the degree to which Healthcare is driving the 40-hour work week. Like a corporation really does not want to hire you for 35 hours, because they still have to pay you a full healthcare package. And you don't want to work 20 hours because then no benefits

It's so weird how most US cities are run by like,, a version of the Urban Growth Machine that's somehow also nimby now? Like they'll support extremely dubious public private partnerships for sports stadiums, and want to legalize gambling for the tax revenue, but housing is too far

Like the benefit comes from people learning the same material multiple times, with the different modalities serving to increase engagement. If people actually think the goal is to match their learning style with the specific modality, you might as well just have one modality for everyone

People talk about hard and soft sciences, but I think a much better line is often between the cheap and expensive sciences, cheap sciences are the ones where it's very cheap to get a bunch of independent data points, education is one of the most expensive sciences bsky.app/profile/leo-...

Something I would like to learn more about is why the state of teaching as taught in universities is filled with so many dubious theories and methods? Intuitively I am inclined to just ascribe it to being like, an extension of the replication crisis especially of medicine, psychology and sociology?

I mean, like I agree that teaching the same material in several different ways is almost certainly a good idea because it increases engagement, but that's not the same thing as learning styles whatsoever, which encourage students to only pay attention to one modality bsky.app/profile/pira...

While you are correct here, I would caution throwing the baby out with the bathwater, because what we do know is people generally learn best when they're given multiple strategies/approaches. Teaching to count by twos by using number lines, manipulatives, songs, etc. is more effective and engaging.

Tbh actually I don't think the UK (or Spain, or Canada, or the US) count because in all these cases it's state vs country, and these are separatist movements where the states want to be an independent country. In India states want to be independent of other states

The reply to this is also correct (simply put down a phone if you want to be bored) but I think a lot of people have just completely forgotten how bad true boredom was. It's just not a concept in modern society anymore, which is great

yeah great that’s fine but there are plenty of situations when there’s simply nothing to do and it’s nice to have the internet

It was kinda interesting being in high school on the tail end of this where everyone was socially liberal but there were like 2 out LGBT people total, there was a bit of a lag between social acceptance and people actually being out

Any queer culture writers who have written about this? I feel like there’s a very real difference between Gen Z and millennial queer culture and β€œI didn’t spend my formative years closeted” seems like one of the clear dividing lines.
