We're featured by Apple in the Duo showcase newsroom article 🀩🀩 My colleagues James and Ryan and I worked super hard on creating the iPhone Duo experience for Shop App, and I'm genuinely happy about this shoutout πŸ₯° If you’re picking up the Duo, let me know how you like Shop!

i know i'm super tunnel visioned but in the last week i've noticed so many more apps on my iPhone update to use native/glass toolbars and tabbar... I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING DEVS πŸ˜‚ sending hugs to y'all, the iPhone Duo support wave is real ✨Shop is gonna look so fine on it✨

11 years ago, Node.js and io.js merged back into one project

the cat is out of the bag: we have rebuilt from the ground up Shop in SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose. it still feels weird to think that it actually worked out lol. needless to say, it was a crazy few months. Can you believe it? full rewrite, and now it's already out in prod 🀯

i'm a nerd, and there's so much I wanna dive in, even in mindset and vision changes (it is indeed true that, in the age of agentic, refactoring is cheap). At some point I'll do a talk, or something. We've sailed in uncharted waters, and I want people to learn from us.

I have to close it with a note on React Native: I still love the community to bits, and I've poured years of my life into it, and got a lot out of it. Simply, as mentioned by Mustafa, it wasn't the right tradeoff anymore here. I'm sure it will keep serving well devs. ty, rn 🫑

two observation, just to put some sprinkles on top: β€’ if a migration takes weeks, there's not enough time for the backlog to grow so big to add more weeks at the end β€’ having a hard rollout deadline is a great forcing function to make things happen

there's so much, SO MUCH I want to chat about and tell about what we've experienced, what we've learned, what we've found and what we've figured out. Comments on the decisions, on what we'd do differently now, etc etc ...we'll get there at some point. not today, im too X_X

today's my 1st anniversary at Shopify - it's borderline insane how much the role of software engineer has shifted in a year. Been in this company genuinely feels like living at the bleeding edge at what coding is shaping up to be:

I've hit that bug around 10:30am, and by... somewhen between 2 and 3pm, the fix rolled out in prod - after some backenders and colleagues from the area owning team were looped into the whole situation and reviewed&approved my River PR.

We are truly living through a full mindshift of what software building is, and what you need to do and what are the tools in your belt. I'm lucky to be in a place where I can experience it full power in first person (the good and the bad). Onto the next year πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ€–πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»

used a fourth agent in Slack to dig into that (River, you might have heard about it from Tobi here x.com/tobi/status... ) and via it I made a PR to fix this backend issue (in an area of code I've never touched before) and then a different CI reviewer agent flagged something

that then River went ahead and took care of until the PR was ready to go and CI was green. It did loop on that PR basically unsupervised, while I was digging deeper with a secondary River instance into the details and impact of the bug across prod, looking through data.

Literally today (not making this up) I was coding our Shop mobile apps with my local agents, in parallel reviewing/tophatting a colleague's PR, hit a bug while testing it, spun up a different agent to help me debug it, figured out it was a backend issue,

on the topic of using Claude Desktop for personal projects, happy to report that Claude Design now actually is quite good indeed - last time I tested it it was when it was first rolled out in beta and it's night and then since then

i use LLMs via CLI at work (pi for the win) so despite being aware of such a thing, i was pleasantly surprised when i told Opus 5 in the claude dsk app about a mobile specific bug for the website i cooked a while ago it just went "well i have the iOS sim, might as well" πŸ‘

quick update from two "5hrs limits" later: Fable seems to have the exact same issue as every other model - once it funnel itself into an idea, it doesn't get out of it no matter what I said. I literally told it to throw away all the code and restart again, and yet he stuck to it

to be clear: that was intentionally something that I wanted to test and validate for myself. I guess I'm just sad/disappointed that even this new class of models can't dig itself out of the direction it picks at the start. but it's also good to know for the future.

(i asked it to redo my website from scratch (V2), then told it "ok, this one cool idea is good, throw away the implementation and do a new wild take on that thing" and yet he didn't. V3 of the website looked super close to V2 in the things I explicitly told it to not do anymore)

im gonna be far from my personal laptop for a few days so decided to crank things up to max and just give it a big chonky task to see what it'd end up with 🍿 also just realised that it's the first time i'm pushing ANY model above xthink (always got "scared" by cost/consumption)

soooo dotfile repos. send me yours (if it's a public one ofc!) - I'm so curious to compare with mine πŸ˜‚ ...which right now I'm keeping private πŸ˜‡ (side effect of me actually trying to move over to ghostty πŸ‘€)

been using a portfolio website project (not for myself) as my personal project/test bench for models. Aside from the sheer fact that Fable allowed me to reach UI levels unreachable before, here are what I think my key elements if I ever had to do another simple/mid website 🧡

infra: namecheap + github + netlify toolset: bun + astro + typescript mcps: chrome devtools + MDN + netlify skills: impeccable models: opus 4.8 AND/OR fable 5 AND/OR gpt5.5

folks i need to expand my horizon, what are some good swift and android newsletters? Something like "this week in react" but for those two native platforms. send me your recs πŸ“©

I don't know about y'all but I feel that lately gpt 5.5 has been degrading quite significantly... I'll switch my core flows to opus 4.8 for a few days and see if it performs 🍿

and the whole project is fully OSS: πŸ”— minebench.ai πŸ”— github.com/Ammaar-Alam... highly highly rec for good insights and token and price comparisons U_U (and yes ofc the entire geopolitic aspect of this fable thing is fascinating to say the least)

...and given the higher cost/lower token availability and how it feels like a disruption/change that you can't leverage with other models, I'm not sure it's worth the tradeoff.
