My alma mater - I used to go to lectures barefoot with my wetsuit and board, and then head down to the beach. And also there's great science there 🏄

Can't make this shit up - deleting or changing data for political reasons is no longer a violation of scientific integrity 🧪

SCOOP: After the Census Bureau issued a highly unusual report tied to a President Trump-aligned think tank, the bureau’s parent agency, the Commerce Department, cut language banning political interference from its scientific integrity policy, @npr.org has learned www.npr.org/2026/08/31/n...

Incredibly cold take - "White Woman's Instagram" from Inside isn't (just) an indictment of said women, it's an indictment of all of us and what we give attention to -- the bridge is a tender depiction of a woman grieving her mother, but it gets zero discussion, we all just laugh at the dunks

Yet another example of management pushing reverse centaurs @doctorow.pluralistic.net Has @aaup.org taken a stance on this kind of thing? And is @aaup.org the union for adjuncts and instructors etc as well, or only tenure track folks?

But the problem, especially in our current moment, where higher ed is basically imploding, is that administrators don't have the luxury of thinking long-term about the risks of dubious tech "desls. They have to do whatever will make money (or avoid losses) short-term so they don't get canned. 4/

🚨 New preprint! 🌀🎲 We explore the interplay between chaotic dynamics and demographic noise in finite populations. Interestingly, we find that the strange attractor persists despite constant perturbations from noise. @theobioarne.bsky.social G.Datseris #evosky 👉📄: arxiv.org/pdf/2504.00028

This + the OMB rule, if implemented, will be the end of American dominance in scientific discovery and will cripple academic research for a generation or more. The latter is the point, and they are willing to endure the former to accomplish it 🧪

Justin Hendrix@justinhendrix.bsky.social

In case you missed it: last week White House Office of Science and Technology Policy director Michael Kratsios issued a big new report on the future of American science. Cole Donovan says it is cover for reallocating funding to the administration's friends—the big AI firms and hyperscalers.

While I agree with basically all of this in principle, the productivity will never come if the present administration succeeds in its efforts to dismantle biomedical research altogether 🧪

Ran Blekhman@blekhman.bsky.social

Everyone says AI will accelerate science. I don't think it will -- at least not in biology, and at least not soon. New post where I explain why, and how the productivity paradox can be resolved: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-ai-wil...

THIS. SO MUCH THIS. I hate the nationalism argument for science funding. Science is global, and so is science funding. We need it everywhere. If the US stops, it’s not like other countries will now invest MORE.

It is useful to see where the rhetoric is headed. Basic science funding is that rare, long-term, bipartisan good thing™️. It's not going to be good for anyone (other than reflexively contrarian hacks) for this to be turned into a partisan issue, but here we go 🧪
