I've been poking around at using Daggerfall Unity as a test bed for testing out game ideas, since it's a more or less fully realized open world. A lot of its simulation is a lot less baked than Morrowind (NPC mechanics, open world interactions), but it feels like a better sandbox to play in.

I do like the flex of using procedural generation to make a huge deterministic map and then not really using it aside from flavor. It's a lot of fun and feels wonderfully decadent!

That brings me back around to the thing I was prototyping - can it be fun to have to travel those long distances manually? I've long thought a courier game, or a long-distance running game, is an unexplored avenue for games. So far, is it fun? No! At higher speeds or smaller distances, a little.

Daggerfall is weird because it doesn't expect you to actually engage with its open world! They expect you to poke around, but I suspect most people won't use it more than once. It hides some things so that it can unlock them as waypoints later, but everything else can be easily fast traveled to.

I occasionally see people lament that Bethesda went downhill once they allowed you to fast travel from anywhere, but Morrowind was the exception there with its more limited fast travel. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate it, but Daggerfall certainly doesn't have it.

I've been playing the Quake Brutalist Jam III maps, and it always makes me happy to see people come together to make cool free content for older games. I'm only like 7 maps in, but it's fantastic.

The discoverability is pretty bad, but sometimes browsing through new games on Steam can pay off. Metal Garden is such a beautifully atmospheric game, with visuals reminiscent of my favorite parts of Team Ico games. I recommend checking it out! store.steampowered.com/app/3539440/...

I got my motivation cut out from under me by the WebGL version looking wrong. I ended up canning it, but knew that it would mean almost no one would play it. That combined with some awkward timing, meant that I ended up sitting on it for a couple weeks until I felt up to releasing it. So here it is.

You are up to date.
