All of them have gone after the press. Lula's government tried to revoke the visa of a NYT correspondent who wrote about his drinking. Jair had federal agencies cancel Folha subscriptions, days after Trump did the same with the NYT and WaPo.

Lula shares Trump's protectionism, and both have attacked their central bank chiefs. Trump told Goldman Sachs's CEO to get a new economist. Lula said Santander should fire an analyst who blamed Dilma Rousseff for the economy's woes – and the bank did.

Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years for a coup plot. Trump pardoned Jan. 6 rioters; Flávio promises the same for Brazil's Jan. 8 rioters. Lula has defended regimes in Cuba, Iran, Nicaragua and Russia, and called democracy "relative" when asked about Venezuela.

So I get that there's (yet again) a big debate going on about AI on Bluesky. I am turning off replies to this post because I don't want to have notifications flooded one way or the other on this one. I just want to share what I've heard multiple times in just the past two weeks.

A transmissão da Copa do Mundo 2026 pela CazéTV é uma síntese do melhor e do pior que a internet nos oferece. O canal democratizou o acesso à informação de qualidade e elevou o padrão de transmissão a um nível antes restrito à TV paga. Análise no Poder360 ⬇️

The Guardian did the simple and obvious thing. Nice! The New York Times somehow fucked up bigly (twice, after doubling down on their podcast). They should at least publish all the ballots. What were they thinking? Were they thinking?

Christopher Hitchens: “However, as often as not you will find that—whatever the high-sounding pretext may be—the worst crimes are still committed in the name of the old traditional rubbish: of loyalty to nation or ‘order’ or leadership or tribe or faith.”

The “Gaza genocide” entry is genuinely bad. By the way, the New York Post and Gizmodo failed to do some really basic fact-checking here. (Gizmodo corrected the headline later, but the piece still has an activist tone.)

Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo added the word "terrorist" multiple times to a Hamas article it translated from the Financial Times (which avoids using the term). - “militant group” → “terrorist group” - “Hamas” → “terrorist group Hamas” - “attack” → “terrorist attacks”

I am obviously fine with Folha labelling Hamas as “terrorist”. But inserting the term into an article that didn't originally use it – even in parts where the FT didn’t use any adjectives – is pretty bad. Readers might come away thinking the FT normally refers to Hamas that way.

And if you try to tweak the thing by watching a bunch of high-quality stuff, it just ends up recommending terrible variations of the stuff. Like “relaxing vibes” classical music livestreams with AI-generated thumbnails.

Parece tão sincero quanto alguns defensores da ciência durante a pandemia...
