My thoughts on GenAI that no one asked for: I feel as though I was primed to love genAI, but not the genAI we got. My brain is wired to most strongly respond to unexpected connections and outcomes. That is how I make art. In 2020 I thought GenAI was the same way... (Continued below)

I'm going to keep generating my own art, one shape at a time by hand. I can't be prompted make a perfect replica of another artist. I can't even consistently replicate my own art style. But yesterday I deleted my Anthropic account, because some things have to stay human. Myself included.

I now see the insane compartmentalizing required to continue enjoying the "good" while disavowing the "bad". Maybe the best Generative Art we will ever see is in the rear view mirror. After all, how the word generation be decoupled from genAI? But I now to look at human made systems for hope...

Dwarf Fortress. Generative landscapes, civilizations, histories, gods, etc. Procedurally generated worlds with 100% human made code, art, writing, and art. Jeff's Map (which I have reposted often). A man who has spent his life generating a mega map with self imposed rules, chance & shear dedication.

Instead, we got averge predictors. Machines designed to predict nothing novel. Just inexpensive art forgery machines. I denied this for awhile. I have continued to use LLMs but avoided using Ai for image generation.

I can't help but look at these tools through the lens of what could have been. I was excites by the early uncanny images made by genAi. I felt that it promised a future of Generative Art, not slop. I didn't understand how these machines really worked.

I do not start a drawing with an image in mind. I start by drawing a line & then I allow my muscle memory to determine what is next. No line is a mistake because mistakes become the art. I can't easily picture images in my head so this is natural for me like discovering shapes in clouds or stars.

So, my art feels like it is a predictive exercise. If this shape, what shape comes next? Early generative AI artwork felt familiar to me. Sure it was uncanny, but I imagined creative machines, like myself, predicting the next shape, finding never before seen combinations. But...

I highly recommend the game Golden Lap to anyone who finds F1 racing tactics fascninating, but does not have time to get into simracing/watching every race. It reminds me also of Mini Metro and Mini Motorways, 2 of my all time favorite games. Great work as always @funselektor.bsky.social

Being an adult includes such fun activities as spending days researching the right doorknob to buy only to find out it doesn't fit due to an inforseeable bs reason. Research and repeat

I really need to start using references and not just winging it lol I was trying to capture the amazing light and dark contrast we see in real life lighting #procreate #art #digitalart
