In 1978 I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal working on a USAID rural health program in the Sine-Saloum region of the country. The program’s goal was to construct health huts in selected villages so that people could get basic medicines without leaving the village.

I joined the project at the very beginning before any huts were built. My role was to conduct some surveys in the local language and attend village meetings in the Nioro du Rip Department to introduce the project’s goal.

USAID is not the criminal organization it is being depicted as. All I see is the richest man in the world trying to take basic things away from some of the poorest people in the world. I weep for the USA.

Each hut was to be stocked with aspirin and medicines for malaria, intestinal worms and scabies. There was also to be bandages, gauze, and antibiotic ointment. In time the hut was to become self-sustaining.

Just started White Nights by Ann Cleeves. One of the things I most like about her writing is the incorporation of Shetland vocabulary. I was in 5th grade at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School in Glendale, California. It was morning. All teachers were told to bring students outside to the flagpole. Then the principal told us that the President was dead. We silently went back to class. My teacher started to cry.
