When the newspaper stack is shown at the beginning of Kane, the audience does not yet know that The Inquirer is Kane's paper, and in the tank for him. The montage is so quick that I wonder how much the contradictions register.

King: A Filmed Record... Montgomery to Memphis 1970. Precisely zero people have watched this documentary and thought "you know, I wish AI had been used to alter those sequences with defects."

Well if Brad Brad unseats Chow, we'll at least have another data point in how prediction markets are useless, dangerous nonsense.

And some NBA fans bemoan load management and even complain that players don't go all out in the freaking All-Star Game! NBA injuries are no joke.

How many takes/blasts do you think the kid in the back suffered through before deciding "screw y'all, I'm plugging my ears." #TCMParty

Characters in older movies make such a point of shaving regularly. I don't know if that is accurate to the time or it's a film exaggeration for continuity reasons. #TCMParty

Eva Marie Saint is so insanely great (and gorgeous) in North by Northwest. The twists and turns with the character border on nonsense but the viewer can never begrudge a second she's on screen. #TCMParty

I saw North by Northwest on 70mm in December (a revelation) and many in the audience seemingly hadn't seen the film before. It felt like they didn't quite get the rhythm and fun of it until this line. Hithcock's "Master of Suspense" reputation is not always a good thing for new viewers. #TCMParty

#TCMParty Reminder:

Nick@kneecogram.bsky.social

North by Northwest is on #TCMParty, a treat in and of itself and a reminder that it's been too long since I watched The Big Lebowski.

North by Northwest is a paraphrase from Shakespeare, when Hamlet is speaking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern about how he is not (always) mad and perhaps there is a method to his madness (another Hamlet paraphrase, later, from Polonius). Also, these credits are amazing. #TCMParty

Kazan's A Life is effusive in praise of Brando, and both Brando and Marie Saint are named in reference to his favourite moments in the movie: these courtship scenes. As much as the backseat soliloquy is iconic and amazing, I'd agree that Brando's best work is in these scenes. #TCMParty

I have always been impressed that the Oscars recognized Brando and Marie Saint, but Malden didn't win. He's a great actor, of course, but his performance in this one is geared towards awards and melodrama instead of reality. From Pauline Kael's review: #TCMParty

Whenever I watch a foreign movie where I know the language, I repeatedly think that the subtitles are off. In Godard more than most. This scene kind of plays with that in fun ways. #TCMParty

A fun parallel in BJ Novak's #TCMParty Two for One and the Coen's O Brother, Where Art Thou? The title, of course, comes from tonight's first title, Sullivan's Travels, and O Brother is loosely based on The Odyssey, which is the movie-within-a-movie in tonight's second title, Contempt.

I love a movie that acknowledges its limitations and earns ridiculousness by running towards being a film, instead of running away. #TCMParty

It's not often that you can say a Pauline Kael review is generous, but you can certainly call Sullivan worse than "slightly" fatuous. Which isn't a bad thing for the film. #TCMParty

Lake was six months pregnant when filming began. According to her autobiography, she delayed telling Sturges—and he was furious when he found out. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

100% true. Mystery, too. Every great movie is partially comedy and mystery, because they're partially about the fact that they're movies/magic tricks. #TCMParty

Of all the Trump editorials and takes since 2016, my single favourite remains this song, written by Sara Bareilles and performed by Leslie Odom Jr. on This American Life: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI8T... And 10 years later, most still don't sufficiently talk about the lack of seriousness.

“How much time do you think this defense secretary spends looking in the mirror in the morning? These are not serious people” — Obama’s audience in Ohio is hanging on every word as he skewers Trump and Hegseth

Why are 4k Blu-ray players so expensive? They're over 10 years old by now. It's going to be a big problem for the physical media industry if the next generation Playstation doesn't have an optical drive.

Mainstream journalists living on Twitter, and rationalizing the fact that they live on Twitter, is an underdiscussed, necessary part of America's current predicament.

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Dream is destiny. It's crazy that Nolan, as great as he is, has neither the best 2014 epic about family with time itself as a supporting character nor the best 21st century dreams within dreams escape movie. Even if we're limiting to English-language directors born on July 30.

Getting #TCMParty away from Twitter was never going to be enough to keep it away from the reach of Musk, plutocrats, and the far-right. There's nothing media or tech out of their reach anymore.

Elon Musk reportedly invests roughly $1 billion in Skydance. It comes weeks after Paramount closed its Warner Bros. takeover.

I'd bet good money that there was a segment about this on Fox News between 9 am and noon today; which is to say that the President of the United States is spending his Thursday as he spends most workdays: watching and angrily live-tweeting cable. It's weird that everyone is always so cool with that.

No serious medical professional diagnoses people remotely and no serious publication publishes such nonsense. I know you hate Trump (you should, you don't hate him near enough, in fact) but unserious nonsense for engagement isn't the remedy to the predicament. In no small part, it is the predicament
