A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

I really started to learn about the physics of pentaquarks when writing an application for a not-funded grant. It was extremely useful. I wonder how the people who outsource that to AI will perform in front of a panel.

I spent 2 months researching/planning/writing my ERC StG application back in 2009, and 2 months again for my ERC CG in 2014. It was necessary to carve out that time to deeply think about why/what/how. I am so pained that so many postdocs are now farming that crucial learning experience off to AI. 😔

👉 www.inp.cnrs.fr/fr/cnrsinfo/...

Cleaned up my follows a bit. Sad to see so many who have not posted for a year. Meanwhile the X algorithm (people I follow) is getting worse by the day. Meta stuff is consistently bad. Social media are killing themselves. 😬

Timeline cleanse with perhaps the most iconic Swiss name for a tiny village section that nevertheless gets its own bus stop: “Cheese and Bread“ 🇨🇭🧀🥖 Or, its official name in Swiss German: “Chäs und Brot” (“Käse und Brot” in standard German)

Today, science became a target for Russia. My heart goes out to the heroes searching for people trapped inside Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences. As well as to the families and loved ones of the victims of horrific attacks across the country.

I am sad to report that a formidable colleague, Ken Lane (Boston U), has died. Ken made many notable contributions, among them his work on the Cornell charmonium model, dynamical symmetry breaking in the form of extended technicolor, and supercollider physics. He shared the 2011 Sakurai Prize. RIP!

Quantum mechanics doesn't like that and prevents it by making it long lived. Well, it's 10⁻²² seconds "long", but that's 10 times more than usual strong decays. Experimentally what you see is that the peak is rather narrow.

So what is this particle at 2317 MeV? The decay to Ds and pion says it's a strong interaction process. But that should be forbidden as it does not respect isospin, a symmetry between light quarks that the strong interaction conserves.

The quark content says it's an excited strange-charmed meson, which usually decay to a D meson and a strange kaon. But that's not allowed as its mass is too low. So the only chance it has is to violate isospin conservation.

I was at Belle in Japan at the time and we had the data to confirm this observation. So I wrote a quick analysis in the morning and after lunch I had a peak with 340 events (I no longer have the plot, sadly).
