We were handing out extra supplies after outreach near the Inside Safe hotel where many of our community members were sent. We ran into someone who we'd lost touch with. He'd been kicked out of the hotel but still hasn't gotten his property, including his phone back.

He's been staying near the hotel in hopes he can get his stuff back but doesn't know where he can go next, but as is common, is hoping he can stay somewhere hidden and out of sight as his old encampment is constantly monitored by police foe "repopulation" and covered in planters.

He won't have a tent or a tarp as his shelters were destroyed in the Inside Safe operation. We have had increasing requests for both as sweeps and exits from Inside Safe continue to rise. While we face an extended heat wave, please hand out cold water where possible.

In the last few weeks, the City conducted two Inside Safe operations in Ktown. A week after getting a room, a friend and member was found dead in it. He left behind a community of friends with questions, and no answers. The same day, the Mayor’s office sent more people to the same hotel.

We attended a community meeting at a police station about an operation. Former encampment residents were not invited. The police told us to police each other while the Mayor's representative asked for support for hostile architecture as a form of beautification to prevent people from "repopulating".

In reality, when people exit Inside Safe they have often lost community, shelter, & belongings for the dream of permanent housing & support. Without that, Inside Safe just temporarily removes poor people from the public eye before dropping them with fewer resources than they had in the first place.

Inside Safe has real shortcomings. 40% of participants exit, having lost their connections to caseworkers. 2% exit to death. Another 2% exit to incarceration. Less than 1% exit to health care and substance abuse support. There is limited info on available services. www.lahsa.org/data-refresh...

Inside Safe doesn't prioritize safety, getting people into permanent housing, or increasing services. It’s about disappearing homelessness from the public eye. After these operations, the Mayor’s office is quick to brag about before/after pictures and the number of people moved into shelters.

One of our volunteers received this message about today's Inside Safe operation. The person in question chose transportation over staying with their neighbors, only to lose their community and their independence.

The mayor's office is conducting two Inside Safe operations around Ktown over the next week. Both of these sites have service providers and ongoing casework that has identified specific needs of the encampment and has placements underway. At one location, two people were on a list for tiny homes.

Of the remaining 60%, most are languishing in interim housing not designed for long-term stays, with no services, isolated from community. Our friends report the same as the LAT reports: isolation, depression, and little to no communication about what's next. www.latimes.com/california/s...

latimes.comUnder L.A. mayor's $300-million homeless program, 40% have returned to the streetEven as Mayor Karen Bass' signature homelessness initiative brings more people indoors, a growing number are winding up back on the street.

Inside Safe is not a solution grounded in community or addressing the shortage of actual housing. It is a very expensive band-aid that the mayor hopes will hide our deep wounds from global audiences watching the World Cup and Olympics, and stalling for time until it becomes someone else's problem.

The mayor's office did not investigate any of what was underway and informed the council offices that everyone would be placed at a hotel. They did not inform caseworkers or ensure that everyone at the encampment was there or understood what was happening in their own language.

40% of inside safe placements end up failing. The mayor's office destroyed trust it's taken service providers time to build up. It interrupted ongoing housing plans that took people's individual needs into account. It is prioritizing speed and the comfort of people who don't want to see poverty.

The sweeps in Ktown and the police harassment have gotten relentless. At night, we see so many more people sleeping on sidewalks with just a blanket. No tents, no shelter, no safety. But during the day, they've become harder to find. One couple we know has gotten pushed all the way across Ktown.

The police harassment and relentless sweeps ordered by Heather Hutt's office mean we haven't been able to find people to follow up on medical concerns. Service requests are getting kicked back at incredibly high rates. From the lucky folks who have phones, we get calls asking for food and water...

...from people we couldn't find on outreach. Making homelessness harder to see isn't fixing anything, but is making it harder for people to survive. We have people who've been denied medical care and are struggling with infections that we cannot find. We need better from our electeds.

there’s an idea floating around that unhoused people have access to infinite resources. but if you ever attended a sweep, you’d quickly realize the state offers the unhoused population violence and little else.

We must be at the "aggressive crackdown" phase of election season. Today we had a huge number of requests for tents, reports of aggressive sweeps & arrests, increased police harassment, and calls from neighbors we couldn't find after displacement. They are hungry, tired, and struggling.

We have neighbors on waitlists for shelter (some of which is still bring built). Their service providers know where to find them, for now. But when the city sweeps them every single waaeek in hopes they break and move, they lose their spots on the list and their connections.

With every passing day, politicians are hoping that out of sight, out of mind will buy them your vote. We've seen it before. Every election empowers police to be more aggressive, harass people more, all while cutting funding for desperately needed services. We all deserve better.

We lost a beloved community member and his partner needs help to pay for funeral costs. One of our volunteers spent months helping her claim her remains. Her spot is scheduled to be swept the day after the funeral and the city refuses to reschedule. If you can help, please do. gofund.me/436b76a18

For those that knew and cared about Armando, planning these services has been a labor of love, community, and compassion. Everything helps.

Closing off public space because it is being used by the public doesn't magically create housing. When police harassed one of our members, who explained he was on a list for housing with a service provider, one cop told him, "give me your info, I'll get you housing".

The cop was surprised that he wanted housing. But it must be harder than he thought because the next time he and his partner tossed the encampment, he wouldn't look our member in the eye. Cutting off public space while fighting investments in public housing does not work.
