This image, which depicts the slow transition from autumn to winter in the pacific northwest, is based on a photograph taken on 10/27/2017 (i.e., nine years ago today).

Snow geese landing on Fir Island, Washington. For those that know the area... In the first image, you can see Mount Baker in the background. In the second image, on the far-right hand side, one can barely make out a mountain top. Any guesses which mountain? Hint: it's near Mount Baker...

Sometimes I wonder what it must be like to fly from Wrangell Island in the Arctic Ocean to the northern Puget Sound of Washington (and beyond). And then head back to Wrangell Island in the spring. All while navigating rugged terrain and dealing with sometimes harsh weather.

Several days ago, there were several scattered flocks of Snow Geese and Cackling Geese on Fir Island, Washington. While I was taking photos, I noticed an incoming flock of Cackling Geese that was being led by a solitary Snow Geese.

Northern Harrier flying over a cornfield, seen yesterday on the Samish Flats, near Edison, Washington. She was patrolling an open field between me and the cornfield. Harriers are one of my favorite birds. "Hawk of the Marsh"

I was set up in field yesterday afternoon, when a Great Blue Heron landed very close to me. I stood very still to get a few images. Eventually it decided that it did like my presence, and took off, eventually flying over a distant corn field.

Female red-winged blackbird, seen yesterday at sunset in the Skagit River estuary. I rarely give these birds much thought, but actually in the light of sunset, they are quite beautiful!

Here are a couple more Double-crested Cormorants, seen a couple of days ago at sunset from Ala Spit on Whidbey Island, Washington. These guys and gals regularly fly between Ala Spit and Hope Island. They can also be seen flying through Deception Pass (e.g., from Pass Island).

Great Blue Heron, with a nearby duck (partially hidden), in the Skagit River Estuary, Washington state. I watched the heron for some time before realizing that there was a nearby duck. They did not seem to be bothered by the close proximity. Seen yesterday evening, just before sunset.
