With one team about to win its first-ever World Series championship, a look at the 121 prior World Series champions (both prior to and since the advent of divisions within the leagues).

The Dodgers being on the verge of elimination, leaving only the Brewers, Guardians, and Rays, is just about the funniest possible outcome heading into a lockout ostensibly about a salary cap.

I wonder how much precedent there is for a player (like Jake Bauers, below) increasing his average bat speed by almost 3 mph from one season to the next at age 29.

Guardians and Rays played fairly similar ball down the stretch - especially offensively. Post-trade deadline: Tampa: .256/.319/.399, 100 wRC+, 230 runs in 49 games Cleveland: .255/.326/.405, 106 wRC+, 230 runs in 48 games The two were 6th and 7th in run differential per game from that point on.

White Sox have definitively passed Cleveland in vibes this season (aggregate talent too, but most importantly: vibes). A fun, young, hungry squad. I unironically think a reason Detroit and Minnesota's cores in the last few years underachieved relative to the Guards was "the vibes were off."

257 distinct pitchers recorded a Save in 2026; the all-time record by a substantial margin. 41% of leaguewide saves were by pitchers with a total of 1-9 saves on the season. There were only 2 closers with 40+ saves.

Crazy looking at how much excellent television there has been this century so far. I wonder how close Search Party was to making it on. That would be in my top 100.

I know in the cosplay of sports the home players are heroes, the away team villains, and the fans' role is only to boost the heroes. In reality: Alonso's a paid entertainer whose employer did not make him a formal offer, and his former customers wanted to applaud his professional milestone.

"I love him to death, but as the 2026 Mets - I know we've definitely underperformed - the guys in here work their ass off every single day. To have that reaction to an opposing player is crazy to me." That's nice guy Sean Manaea speak for "We're pissed" over the reception for Pete Alonso.

Honestly if the team were performing better, the fans would have probably stayed in their narrative role and treated Alonso as a villain. The story falls apart when the team does. Relatedly, I saw the Browns give their former kicker, Phil Dawson (a 49er) a video tribute and long ovation in 2015. 😂

Manaea was of course answering this question in character, in a way: As a paid hero who expects the fans to be playing their assigned narrative part in the storytelling of sports. But some fans opted to exit the theatre of it, and acknowledge the feat on a human level. No harm in it.

nytimes.comOpinion | My Question for the Formerly WokeBefore a Woke 2 takes over, let the proponents of its predecessor explain how and why they’re moving on.

It's only August, but the decentralization of saves in MLB continues: 235 distinct pitchers have already recorded a save this season - more than in any prior season since the save's inception.

For 2022 and 2023, Andres Gimenez was putting up 4-6 win seasons and Guardians fans could squint and say they managed okay in the Lindor trade. But six years after the deal, I think it's a pretty straightforward story that they traded away a star - and lost a star's worth of production.

While mainstream WNBA discourse has been politically hijacked by people who don't actually know or care about the WNBA - the WNBA is quietly: - having its best attendance ever - seeing better shooting, ball movement, and scoring than ever - about to expand to 18 teams by 2030

Denae Benites update: .824/.778/1.706, 5 HR, 15 RBI, 6 SB in 4 games She is leading - and more than doubling up the second-place person - in HR/RBI/SB. The rest of the league has 6 homers combined. Practically playing a different sport than her competition.
