It’s 1954, and families across the United States are deciding whether their children should participate in trials for the newly developed polio vaccine. What would you decide? #CommunityImmunity #PublicHealth #ScienceEducation #NGSS #TeacherResources #LabXchange

Community immunity depends on many factors. In the video “Why Outbreaks Still Happen: Simulating Community Immunity in Real Time,” created by @galacticpolymath.com, students hear from researchers exploring how vaccination rates, social networks, access, & vaccine confidence shape community immunity.

Students get to take on the role of a parent and explore how factors including vaccination rates, access, social influence, and disease infectiousness can affect what happens when an outbreak enters a community.

How can one person’s health decision affect an entire community? New resources from @galacticpolymath.com, now available on LabXchange, invite students to explore this question through an interactive simulation, scientific research, and history.

This collection gives students opportunities to investigate how vaccination rates and community-level factors influence disease spread, hear from researchers studying vaccination decision-making, and examine the choices families faced during the 1954 polio vaccine trials.

Great teaching can look different in every classroom, but there’s a lot educators can learn from one another. This #WorldTeachersDay, we’re sharing advice from educators across the LabXchange community, from Mexico, the United States, and Malawi.

Their reflections touch on something we see across our community: giving learners space to explore, connecting learning to their interests, encouraging critical thinking, and creating opportunities that might not otherwise be possible.

And to educators everywhere: thank you for the curiosity you nurture, the questions you encourage, and the opportunities you create for learners every day. 💚 What’s one piece of teaching advice that has stayed with you?

Some AP® Biology topics are hard to teach not because the content is obscure, but because students are being asked to make sense of several interconnected ideas at once. #APBiology #BiologyTeacher #ScienceEducation #STEMEducation #LabXchange

In a new series of videos, we’ll explore how digital resources can help educators break complex ideas into smaller pieces, give students space to learn at their own pace, build familiarity through consistent visuals, and create more opportunities to practice.

Follow along as we explore tools for teaching cell signaling, meiosis, genetics, data analysis, and more. 🧬 Read more in our latest blog: LabXchange's AP® Biology Deep Dives: Tips for Teaching Biology's Hardest Topics:

f.mtr.coolLabXchange's AP® Biology Deep Dives: Tips for Teaching Biology's Hardest TopicsThis summer, we ran a three-part professional learning series pairing our subject matter experts with advanced biology educators to dig into three popular topics in AP® Biology.

A cell signaling pathway with multiple moving parts. Meiosis at the intersection of cell division, inheritance, and gene expression. Data analysis layered onto the results of a lab.

This summer, our AP® Biology Deep Dives brought LabXchange subject matter experts and educators together to explore where students get stuck and the teaching strategies that can help. Now, we’re taking a closer look at some of those strategies in action.

Students don’t only learn about science through equations, experiments, and diagrams. They also learn through the people whose work and experiences are included in the curriculum. #STEMStories #VoicesInScience #STEMEducation #BelongingInSTEM #LabXchange

Today is National Online Learning Day 🌍 Online learning has the power to open up new ways to learn, connect, and explore—but access is still far from universal.

According to UNESCO, 2.6 billion people, or 32% of the global population, still lack internet access. Closing that gap will take continued collaboration and investment so that more learners can benefit from the opportunities digital learning creates.

At LabXchange, that means making high-quality #ScienceEducation available for free online, so more curious minds can explore, learn, and discover beyond the traditional classroom. Explore the LabXchange.org library to discover 34,000+ free digital learning resources!

A new school year is a chance to establish what a strong scientific explanation looks like. A claim states the answer. Evidence shows what supports it. Reasoning explains why the evidence makes the claim convincing. That final step is often the hardest and the most important.

Three questions can help learners build stronger explanations from the start: - What is your claim? - Which evidence supports it? - Why does that evidence support your conclusion? #BackToSchool #ScientificReasoning #ScientificThinking #ScienceEducation #LabXchange

Lab safety begins before the first beaker comes out. Rules are easier to remember when students understand why they matter. Rather than treating safety as a checklist on the wall, educators can make it part of the way the class investigates, collaborates, and cares for one another.

A few #LabSafety habits to establish from the start: - Wear goggles and appropriate lab attire before beginning an investigation. - Make sure learners know where safety equipment is located. - Review potential hazards and safe equipment use before materials are distributed.

🧪 Is it a fair test? Imagine two plants receiving different amounts of water, but one is placed beside a sunny window and the other in a dark corner.  What caused the difference in growth: the water or the light?

A strong investigation changes one factor at a time so that an outcome can be directly connected to a possible cause. Start the year by helping students distinguish between: - Independent variables - Dependent variables - Controls

Eukaryotes, on the other hand, can be single-celled or multicellular. They store their DNA inside a nucleus, contain ribosomes, and have various membrane-bound organelles. Plants, animals, and fungi all fall under the category of eukaryotes.

How can AP Biology teachers build students’ confidence with data? Data analysis & visualization skills are increasingly important on the AP Biology exam, but students often need more practice interpreting data, creating graphs, describing variability, and connecting data back to biological concepts.

Science lives outside the lab, in every question we ask about the world around us. Happy birthday, Rosalind Franklin! Today is a reminder that curiosity is where scientific discovery begins. At LabXchange, we believe that the same curiosity belongs to everyone, everywhere. 🧬

Sunlight becomes glucose through photosynthesis. Glucose becomes usable energy through respiration. And that energy moves through ecosystems in a pattern that repeats from a single cell to an entire food web.
