I early-voted today and the line was out the door. Usually when we vote early it's an empty house. Love to see this and hope it means change is really coming.

Not that I was ever not enjoying it, but my enjoyment for the new Castlevania has increased considerably over time. I think a lot of its design could register as either refinements or deficiencies depending on personal preference, but it's certainly a worthy substitute to…no Castlevania games ever.

I also think they had to take into account the fact that Bloodstained exists now to maintain the status quo. I want these things to coexist and not be redundant.

I will say it takes a while to hit its stride. The cost of subweapons is pretty high for a pretty long time, and you don't even get to the castle for a few hours. But that does make each milestone of progression feel really exciting and rewarding.

E.g., there's a lot more level design per inch than in the past Metroidvania-style games, which brings the difficulty a little closer to classicvania. But arguably part of the former's mass appeal was that you had so much breathing room. You were largely free to explore the castle without stress.

They've done away with a lot of the loot clutter. In SotN, it was common to find weapons that 1) didn't do anything interesting and 2) were already obsolete. The latter CAN happen here, but is rare. Usually when I find a weapon it feels like a legit reward and encourages me to switch.

And notably a much more interesting treatment than Lords of Shadow, which kind of just abandoned everything except a few proper nouns. Belmont's Curse at least attempts to think critically about what the series to date did and how certain aspects could be iterated upon.

My feeling about Onimusha's difficulty is that it's not as hard as Sekiro, but the second playthrough (on Carnage) is harder than my second Sekiro playthrough. Maybe because Sekiro forces you to get really good on playthrough 1? Onimusha only forced me to get kind of good.

On second thought, this isn't really a fair comparison. Sekiro has difficulty modifiers I've never bothered with (Kuro's charm, the Demon Bell). A second Onimusha playthrough on Action is probably pretty breezy.

It only counts if you remember to shout "Onimusha!" when you have one Achievement left. Anyway, great game with some fat on it. I've only 100%ed four games ever, so that's something.

Man, I thought I had this Onimusha Carnage run in the bag, but I've been stuck on the final boss for about eight hours spread over three sessions now. I've only gotten to his third phase once, and died pretty much right away. Pretty much at a loss 😬

Part of the problem is prob that I didn't level up all my gear completely, but it's all lvl 3 and 4. After so many hours with the game, I'm ready to see the gear leveling system is pretty poorly done and probably shouldn't be there at all, let alone with a "point of no return."

Sekiro really got it right imo. You basically only level up your stats at scripted moments, so the designers were able to balance the difficulty for one predictable player experience. In this, you level up by doing (not very good) side quests. The padding makes the whole game less tight.

It's kind of funny that Onimusha got this "take side jobs around town" layer before DMC even though the entire premise of DMC is that you're a small business owner in a city while in Onimusha you're a zombie revived to carry out a vendetta. Why are you still taking gigs??

It's like if they made a The Crow game where you occasionally interrupted your righteous revenge quest to help people with their noisy neighbors and lost belongings. Which yeah I would play

This is great, but I fear the advent of auto-aim will deprive players of magic moments like this one (gif'd from an old tweet)

Working on an update for Owlboy for the first time in many, MANY years. Read more about the upcoming features and additions on Steam: store.steampowered.com/news/app/115... #steam #owlboy #gamedev #pixelart

There should be a database called that documents all the scary stuff hidden in the backgrounds of shots in movies. They could call it "So Scary I Didn't Notice." (Seriously though I love this stuff and want to see all of it.)

Btw, if you're craving more boss fights like the ones in Onimusha but don't need all the busywork in between, Furi is a good place to go next. One of my faves of the last 20 years or so, and it's like six bucks on Steam atm store.steampowered.com/app/423230/F...

Also ironically, a surefire way to tell you're dealing with a SEGA Saturn is that they're very sensitive to sunlight

The narrative surrounding DmC (the reboot) within the Devil May Cry community seems to evolved to a majority view that the game is good "except for the story." That exact recipe is what makes it a Devil May Cry game!

Like normally I would play until I either win or get absolutely tilted and have ruined my circadian rhythm for the next week, but my tolerance for his personality is so much lower than my tolerance for losing fights

Mostly Onimusha is super fair and bullshitless, but I'm not a big fan of the style of boss fight that starts with two full minutes of tedious mob cleanup followed by a strong guy who kills you in two hits.

Is there one where you're the doctor and you have to build the monster and you get different results based on the quality of the ingredients you gather? If not that should be a thing

Since Onimusha already has time-traveling, they should do a crossover with DMC and have Musash face off with fellow swordboy-magichand Nero and fellow Japanophile Vergil. Onimusha is probably more popular than Jean Reno atm, so they should get him back as well

Man…LIC certainly has my number, but there have been significant issues with five out of six orders I've placed with them in the past (namely damaged items and years-long delays with insufficient transparency imo). I started feeling like an idiot about four orders ago. I think I'm tapping out. :/

Notably, the Grasshopper Manufacture book has been in licensing limbo for like two years, and even back when they announced it, something else I'd ordered was in distribution limbo, which made me hesitate long enough to miss the backer window for the fancy edition.

Sekiro fans love to parrot the phrase "Hesitation is defeat" as though it's the key to mastering the whole game, but a more helpful phrase for me would've been "Do less." It works for Onimusha as well!

I know Sony is having a Moment, but it's pretty surreal to see that virtually every single comment on the Dark Arisen 2 trailer is people demanding that the DLC be delivered as a whole new disc. The people have spoken and they WANT Super Ultra Hyper Street Fighter II Turbo.

DDDA1 was released as a disc with no add-on option for owners of the base game, seemingly because Capcom simply didn't know how to do DLC yet and hadn't planned for it. In 2013 that felt archaic and inexcusable.
