The skier Hermann Maier wore a zero-friction suit that made him the fastest man on the mountain. Then he fell, and the suit meant nothing could slow him down. Efficiency is wonderful right up until the moment you need to stop. When you blindly optimize, you actually fragilize.

Only the inefficient bees survive! Imagine you're a management consultant hired by a beehive. You notice that roughly 20% of the bees ignore the waggle dance and fly off in random directions. Almost all of them come back with nothing. Obvious waste.

You introduce OKRs, a waggle dance compliance dashboard and a performance improvement plan for the bottom 5%. Next quarter, nectar is up. The hive is 100% efficient. You get a case study!

Then the cows eat the only meadow, nobody knows where anything else is, and the hive starves to death on the back of its best quarter ever. Evolution ran this experiment for millions of years and kept the inefficient bees. We ran it for a couple of decades with just-in-time and found out in 2021.

Organization Dysfunctions - with @trond.hjorteland.com! In this episode, we explore how dysfunctional organizations' over-focus on metrics (like DORA) and frameworks (Agile/Scrum, Team Topologies), strips away context, prompting gaming, โ€œeverything is fineโ€ reporting, and burnout.

When tools like AI are imposed by leadership, they risk deskilling workers and treating them as replaceable parts rather than purposeful human beings. Conversely, a DP2 structure empowers those doing the work to control their own coordination, fostering genuine engagement and higher quality output.

Trond argues these metrics are outputs of deeper conditions and should be owned and re-contextualized by the people doing the work, not imposed from management.

Cyb3rSyn Labs is a startup born out of the failures of mainstream management practices! It is a crusade against our blind chasing of Taylorism, reductionism, and efficiency. I'd like to dedicate today to all those who are working so passionately to bring the esoteric into the exoteric!

100 Years of Stafford Beer! Today is Stafford Beer's birthday. Beer is known as the father of Management Cybernetics, which he described as the science of effective organization. #leadership #management #cybernetics #systemsthinking #complexity

I'm such a big fan of his work that I named my company Cyb3rSyn Labs. Cyb3rSyn is a leetspeak nod to Project Cybersyn, architected by Stafford Beer. The word Cybersyn is a portmanteau of the words 'Cybernetics' and 'Synergy'.

Genuine freedom is rare in the software industry... According to Open Systems Theory, there are two fundamental Design Principles (DP) that act as the DNA for any organization:

Design Principle 1 (DP1): Responsibility for coordination and control is located at least one layer above the work. Design Principle 2 (DP2): Responsibility for coordination and control is located with the people doing the work.

One Question to Ask About Work - @trond.hjorteland.com For me, this resonates with: Watch the full podcast here: youtu.be/HoB606zVS5I #leadership #systemsthinking

Organizational Dysfunctions! The latest episode of the Cyb3rSyn Labs Podcast features one of my favorite sociotechnical practitioners, @trond.hjorteland.com, who explores why modern organizations remain plagued by dysfunction despite decades of research and what the data shows.

Purpose of a System is What It Does! Listen to what Abdul Aziz has to say about POSIWID, Fantasy Gap, RAEWCI framework and more - a TON of insights useful for Silicon Valley executives. Checkout the YouTube video here: youtu.be/m9i0Gak5puw #leadership #systemsthinking #complexity #cybernetics

Cyb3rSyn Labs Podcast - Episode 45 In this episode, Abdul Aziz, explores the Viable Operating Model (VOM) and its foundation in systems thinking and cybernetics. He emphasizes that a system's true purpose is defined by its actions rather than its stated goals.

He argues for a shift from mechanistic, clock-like management toward a more adaptive, cloud-like approach that balances short-term stability with long-term survival. The discussion covers practical approaches like RAEWCI analysis, which distinguishes between responsibility and authority.

People are Purposeful & Your model is Wrong! Silicon Valley treats people like a cog in a wheel that they can throw out and replace on a whim. Checkout what Abdul Aziz has to say on this topic and much more on organizational design and development... #leadership #cybernetics #systemsthinking

Viable Operating Model with Abdul Aziz In this episode, Abdul introduces his Viable Operating Model (VOM) as a framework for organizational improvement. He critiques traditional management for treating employees like cogs in a machine, advocating instead for a people-centric approach.

The discussion explores how the VOM bridges the gap between strategy and operations. Abdul emphasizes the importance of epistemological humility, arguing that managers must focus on the relationships between parts rather than just the parts themselves.
