SCN is launching the second of two national research funding competitions and Breakthrough T1D is excited to partner again on joint-funding award opportunities!    Webinar: August 13, 2026, at 1pm ET Competition opens August 31, 2026. More details here: tinyurl.com/SCN-FO

tinyurl.comResearch Funding - Stem Cell NetworkFor more than 20 years, the Stem Cell Network has made strategic investments in stem cell and regenerative medicine research, helping to position Canada as a global leader in the field. As Canada’s on...

This proposal was shaped with input from researchers, clinicians, industry experts, policymakers, and members of the T1D community, all focused on one shared goal: ensuring people in Canada can benefit from breakthrough therapies as soon as possible.

The BTNC is designed to: • Link expertise, ideas, and efforts across the country • Bring T1D clinical trials to Canada faster • Support more trial sites nationwide • Help ensure therapies are developed, tested, and delivered in Canada

Last week, Breakthrough T1D Canada had the privilege of co-hosting a workshop with Canada’s Stem Cell Network and Shift Health focused on a critical and complex topic:  "Unlocking Access for Type 1 Diabetes Cell Therapies in Canada: Identifying Solutions for Regulatory and Reimbursement Success."

Key themes that emerged: ✅ The value of cell therapies - both clinical outcomes AND what matters to people living with T1D ✅ The need for regulatory clarity for cell therapies ✅ Capitalizing on opportunities to collaborate ✅ How innovative models can enable reimbursement of cell therapies in Canada

The workshop brought together regulators, payers, legal experts, researchers, industry experts, non-profit leaders and people with lived experience. Let’s keep the conversation going. If you’re working in this space or have ideas - please connect!!

‘Official’ results from the Vertex VX-880 trial using stem cell-derived islets for people with type 1 diabetes #T1D 10 out of 12 people with reduced or eliminated need for insulin 🎉 But note the need for immunosuppression and limited eligibility… this is not (YET) the ‘cure for everyone’

What a legacy 🇨🇦 Drs. Till & McCulloch discovered stem cells in the 60s which changed the future of regenerative medicine and contributed to solving one of the biggest hurdles (having enough cells) in the quest to cure type 1 diabetes #T1D #stemcell

Great new research - one of the difficult aspects of #T1D is that there’s no way to “see” islet or beta cells to check if they are being attacked or functioning well so new biomarkers are important! (More info in comments…)

STOP T1D@stopt1d.bsky.social

#T1D Research Report Findings: "M120 identified 26% more children at high risk of progression" of #Type1Diabetes. "M120 Risk Score Improves Identification of Children at High Risk of Developing Clinical Type 1 Diabetes and Reports Short-Term Response to Preventive Immunotherapy" bit.ly/4jwYfGL

A biomarker is something measurable that indicates what’s happening in the body (an A1c is a biomarker of blood glucose). With an increase in screening tests and preventative therapies, biomarkers of beta cell function are becoming more important.

When beta cells make insulin, C-peptide is ‘broken off’ and this can be measured in blood draws. C-peptide has been the ‘primary outcome’ for many #T1D preventative therapy trials, but it’s not a very sensitive test and can be costly.

So much knowledge comes from a registry - this is a catalyst for many other research projects and often helps guide research priorities! If you (or your child) lives with type 1 diabetes #T1D #LADA and are located in Canada 🇨🇦, PLEASE consider contributing to research! (Completely virtual too).

🎉 5,000 people have joined the BETTER registry! 🎉 Thanks to you, research is moving forward and we’re improving our understanding of the realities faced by people living with type 1 diabetes and LADA in Canada. #type1diabetes #BETTERregistry #diabetesresearch #T1D #LADA #Canada #PatientVoices

VERY important research from the fantastic Dr. Jane Speight. The burden of self-managed chronic conditions should not be underestimated! If you live in Canada and want to find a mental health worker that understands diabetes burden ( #T1D or #T2D) - check on our directory.breakthrought1d.ca

Unfortunate to see today’s news from Vertex about their VX-264 therapy for #T1D but this is why we always have ‘multiple shots on goal’! Considering that the same cells are being used as in VX-880 (so far great data) it’s reasonable to assume that the device encapsulation was the problem here.

For those curious why the same cells are effective on one trial (VX-880) and not another (VX-264)… The 880 trial is putting the cells directly into the body and using immunosuppression drugs to protect them. The 264 trial was putting the same cells in a ‘teabag’ device that goes under the skin

Always exciting to see new Clinical Practice Guidelines, but these are especially exciting: - T1D across the lifetime instead of broken up into stages 👏 - recommending AID for all ages and stages of T1D 👏👏 - first in the world to recommend considering the use of adjunctive therapies for T1D 👏👏👏

Really fascinating debate at #ATTD2025 about whether or not we should use placebos in trial design for preventative therapies of #T1D now that Tzield (teplizumab) has shown efficacy and is approved in a few countries. Heavy hitters Colin Dayan and Laura Jacobsen presented excellent points!

Take-home message: we need better trial design for preventative therapies... adaptive trial design is likely the best option, but #T1D is such a heterogenous disease and finding people in early-stage is difficult!

This is so powerful… “Has your diabetes been impacted by menopause?” 88% say YES! Research is starting to grow in this area: to see Canadian trials related to menopause and #T1D check out our Clinical Trial Finder clinicaltrials.breakthrought1d.ca

The #T1D and #Menopause poster has gone live at #ATTD2025 🥳 Thanks to #dedoc° for making it possible for so many of us who were involved to attend

Thrilled to (virtually) watch a fantastic talk at #ATTD2025 from Dr. Cristina Nostro about co-culturing pluripotent stem cells with macrophages which not only provides protection but also increases endocrine output!

📣Students and postdocs, consider Canadian universities for grad studies! Tuition is typically offset by teaching assistantships for seminars/labs, and applying is as simple as making contact with a PI to start. If you’re in the field of #T1D - reach out if you’d like us to help make a connection!

Francis Lynn 🇨🇦@nictitate.bsky.social

It’s pretty easy to “apply” for a PhD in Canada, and a little different from most US places, just send a cover letter, CV and undergrad transcript to a PI you’d like to work with. Put some effort into it, make sure you convey what you’re applying for and why.

Registries are such a critical accelerator for research! If you or someone you know in Canada lives with #T1D, please consider being a part of the BETTER Registry!
