If you don't want to see this horrible garbage happen in every future high-stakes election, make sure it demonstrably fails in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race by helping elect Susan Crawford

The Trump administration has deported hundreds of migrants while refusing to reveal their identities or the evidence against them, prompting complaints from the migrants’ families and from critics who say the administration is trampling on civil liberties.

You don't have to like or agree with Mahmoud Khalil. That's the point. They deliberately picked someone to be first who wouldn't be as universally sympathetic. If we want to keep people from being stripped of their rights, we have to defend the rights of EVERYONE, even people we might not like.

Mahmoud Khalil should be at home with his pregnant wife. Instead, he's been illegally abducted & had his constitutional right to free speech & due process stripped. We're demanding his immediate release and we cannot allow this abuse of power to go unchecked. #FreeMahmoudKhalil

if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.

Make America boring again! I want a government that's actively reducing the risk of my life/house/family being destroyed by wildfire, epidemics, hurricanes, serious health diagnosis, floods, unemployment, landslides, critical goods shortages, violence, dust storms, etc.

Why do I support my tax dollars going to various federal agencies? Because I'm already living paycheck to paycheck, paying for housing, childcare, health deductibles, insurance, glasses & dental care (somehow not part of healthcare), saving for college & retirement, etc.

The federal government gives me very good value for my tax dollars. Could it be streamlined? Sure, but I want it pruned by someone with some basic concept of the value of what they're cutting.

The last people I want in charge of making those cuts are an egomaniacal billionaire who thinks money = wisdom and won't be affected because he can easily afford to pay for everything privately, and his team of overpaid 20-somethings who have never had to take care of anyone else in their lives.

I don't have $$$ to spare to pay for private fire fighting, policing, military protection, medical research, scientific research, buying land for recreation, private verification my food and water are safe, weather alerts, support for the arts, and foreign aid.

Anti-vax? Why haven't you disabled the airbags in your car yet? After all 284 people died in 1990-2017 due to airbag-related injuries. And they only reduce death crashes by 34% (61% w' seatbelts.) If something isn't 100% certain and there's any risk of death, you shouldn't do it, right? /s

When conservatives bleat about DEI hires, a reason they think that women and minorities are less competent than white men is that the women and minorities *on their side* legitimately ARE less competent. They just can't understand why the competent people might not want to be on their team.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

In the wins column: My 9-year-old spontaneously folded two loads of laundry, her own and her sister's. This is a first-ever for her. In the losses: My 3-year-old refuses to eat absolutely anything I cook her, even previously acceptable foods. She now lives on fruit and goldfish.

Have you ever run into a problem and thought, "Somebody should do something about this?" Yeah, well for countless times in the past that "somebody" was a federal employee.

Can we just ID this guy as the nepo baby he is?

robert f. kennedy jr. submits his application to harvard university. his application is, in its entirety, a single page with his name "Robert F. Kennedy Jr." he is accepted immediately.

My daughter has a school assignment to write historical fiction about the Japanese internment during World War II. She's eight years old. I really didn't anticipate how topical that particular chapter in US history would suddenly become. #guantanamo #internmentcamps #neveragain?

Today is Lunar New Year and we're going into the year of the wood snake. I've seen two commentators in the last couple of days evoke the ouroboros, the ancient symbol of a serpent eating its tail, to describe two different aspects of what's happening now. That feels meaningful to me.

If you didn't vote for Harris because of Gaza either you don't understand cause and effect or prioritize your own feelings over the lives of millions, including Palestinians. (Just in case you're wondering, the latter of those two choices would mean you're Not a Good Person. Live with it.)

“The Democrats didn’t do enough on Gaza, so I withheld my vote to make a statement.” “Well, Trump won and now he’s gonna destroy Gaza.” “Yep. We’re paying the price for the Democrats’ incompetence.” “‘We?’ The Gazans are paying the price, not us” Pause. “I needed to make a statement.”

I'd never be able to cut it as a spy or cat burglar or anything like that. I had to sneeze right as I was sneaking out of my toddler's bedroom door tonight. It damn near broke me.

I'm hearing third-hand reports of ICE raids in Wausau, Appleton, Menasha, and Green Bay. Might be targeting big farming operations there. As a reminder, if you see something happening Voces de la Frontera has a 24-hour bilingual hotline: 414-418-9409

Our six-month experiment with having the kids (8 & 2 y.o.) share a room is over. It worked well for a while, but they didn't do a good job of sharing toys in the playroom and kept each other up, particularly when sick. So today I moved a ton of furniture to create distinct bedrooms again. I'm tired!

Friends with birdfeeders: with an artic blast coming in, I'm taking time today to fill my feeders, and I include extra protein, like new suet cakes and peanuts, in my seed mix.

Most species we feed at backyard feeders don't have "nice warm nests" they can shelter in when it's cold. They get whatever shelter they can find in vegetation and fluff up their feathers to conserve body heat.

Birds burn fuel and fat to generate that heat, and we can help by providing healthy, high-protein meals with lots of good fats by feeding birds during the cold. #birdfeeding #birdfeeder #backyardbirding #wisconsinbirds #polarvortex

Yesterday, I got off work, did an errand, went to yoga, had dinner with a friend, had drinks with folks I know through work, and then went to a personal care appointment. I didn't get home until after the kids were in bed; my husband handled the evening solo. IT FELT FANTASTIC.

#moralofthestory Really good parenting -- the kind where you're physically, intellectually, and emotionally present -- requires time away from parenting. You need time to yourself, to connect with other adults and do things that sustain you. You need to get to move your body and be un-rushed.

Some people will make us think that we're selfish when we take time for ourselves, and motherhood requires ongoing, perpetual martyrdom. They couldn't be more wrong. Moms, in particular, need time and space away from work and kids. It's better for moms, AND it's better for kids. #motherhood

As a result I could come home and tag-out my husband who was sleeping on the floor next to the toddler, becuase she's been having trouble sleeping. I handled it when she woke up sick and needed medication in the middle of the night, and slept fitfully for the rest of the evening.

I’m going back to my 2023 reading goal: 24 physical books. Last year I tried to go up by a third to 36 and I tanked, hard. My life got more complicated and time to just read got scarce. Getting further and further behind on my goal actually discouraged me to read more.

And if I feel bad about my total reading count I’ll remind myself that according to every reading expert “audiobooks count” and I crunched through about 40 of those last year.

I’m going back to my 2023 reading goal: 24 physical books. Last year I tried to go up by a third to 36 and I tanked, hard. My life got more complicated and time to just read got scarce. Getting further and further behind on my goal actually discouraged me to read more.

So this year I’m taking the advice of Kendra Adachi and I’m #startingsmall. I’m going for a modest 2 books a month and I’m not going to judge myself for what those books are. I get plenty of profound, serious, highbrow content from the news, blogs, and podcasts I consume regularly. #NPRaddict

How the heck would we know if companies are lacking in "masculine energy” when we have literally never tried to have a mega corporation with anything else?
