Love friends of the library book sales! I always find great scifi books. But lately I also check the vintage kid's books. Today's was the best haul yet! Cool retro space books! #retrorocket #rocketship #spaceart #midcentury #vintagebook

I'm working on a book cover commission and the brief calls for a monster that's like a spider but without a head or thorax. One idea was a daddy long legs like creature. It got rejected, but you can enjoy it anyway! #InverteFest #scifi #alien

Yay! I'm happy to take part in this fun periodic exhibition. There's a wide range of entries and styles. I definitely recommend checking it out! #InverteFest #insect #arthropods bsky.app/profile/fran...

“The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands...may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison

Yesterday's thrift store haul. Vallejo paint rack for $5. TARDIS jewelry box (will reuse for a Dr. Who action figure.) And something not often seen: a manual receipt/note machine from the 1940s. A roll of paper inside pulls through front slot. Tear off when done! #miniaturepainting #retro #drwho

The effective federal corporate income tax rate: 1950: 50% 1990: 25% 2020: 13% Stop asking "but how we will pay for it?" Restore the corporate tax rate. That is how we will pay for it.

Talpra magyar! (Rise Hungarian!) Petőfi Sándor's famous anthem called Hungarians to revolt against the Austrians in 1848. Though ultimately they failed, his cherished poem is just as relevant today as Hungarians finally tossed off Orbán’s yoke! (1/2) #Magyar #Hungary

As you can tell by my good Irish name 😉, I'm Hungarian, though I was raised in the US by parents fleeing Communism. Hungarians have a long history of fighting control by other countries. To have one of our act like a dictator and court Russian domination always rankled me.

My fellow writers might not want to hear this, but AI is a useful tool for certain aspects of the craft, like for instance when you’re engaged in the process of being a talentless shitbag hack who is too lazy to do any fucking writing.

This is my dog. The same animal that burns with the eternal rage of a thousand suns when the UPS truck shows up. Cowering at my feet and shaking in fear because there's a fly in the house. A FLY... 🙄

RIP. It's sad to hear of his passing. However, bI have a love-hate relationship with Dan Simmons. His Hyperion Cantos is simply one of the best scifi series ever (IMHO.) But his other works can be very uneven or downright terrible (I'm looking at you The Terror!)

RIP Dan Simmons (April 4, 1948 – February 21, 2026). Author of my favourite ever science fiction book series, the Hyperion Cantos.

Through the great words of James Baldwin, “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.”

Just to add my two cents here: the last 5 years of my library career at Stanford was managing the Media & _Microtext_ Center. It housed all of the audio-visual materials in our humanities library. So I know a little about microfilm... 😉 See more details in my comments: 👇

Modern microfilm readers ain't your grandparents' machines, even in public libraries. They're 26MP digital cameras with OCR, image editing, etc. You see everything to *be* seen. The idea he brought a magnifier to find something "hidden in the shadow" is ludicrous... (Here's an example of a scan:)

Microfilm, just like anything else scanned, photographed, printed or otherwise reproduced, can and _does_ have mistakes. Sometimes ghost images and words from subsequent pages show through. There's stains, tears, creases, etc. So a shadow is just a shadow.

I can't say enough how important it is to oppose these camps with every fiber of our beings... As commentators pointed out many of these proposed concentration camps are near railroad tracks. 'Nuf said.

Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

The massive government funding package just failed badly in the Senate, 45-55. Needed 60. Zero Democrats voted for it. SEVEN Republicans opposed it: Budd Johnson Lee Paul Moody Rick Scott Tuberville (John Thune switched his vote to no for procedural reasons.)
