It will be a shock to noone that the campaigns against Professor Jason Arday - that continue even after they hounded him to death - are financed by far right-inclined millionaires who also finance far right think tanks, media, academic racists and Neo Nazis. bylinetimes.com/2026/10/21/j...

Well Cork Jazz Festival. Well. The husband bought tickets for a multi-sited event in the Metropole tonight and i was just mortified. As the night went on how terrible the crowds were, treating the bands like they were backdrops to their main character syndrome. Was mortified to be there.

The music was amazing, the bands just superb, but the crowds were so badly behaved. Some crowds just standing talking the whole way through sets, the last band in a big room had about 6 of us actually engaging with the music. I’m not even that into music but it was good and i was embarrassed.

one of the few times i felt like shouting ‘Im sorry and I’m not from here’. For a city so into its culture and music i was astounded how poor the treatment of the bands was. Genuinely embarrassed.

My new Briefing Paper on rights developments relevant to public procession and protest law in NI and the Drumcree dispute is now available. In short, careful attention needs to be given to residents' rights as a "captive audience" opposing an unwanted parade: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Now i know it’s Hallowe’en approaching, my fav turnip has made an appearance!

National Museum of Ireland@nmireland.bsky.social

Long before pumpkins became the Halloween tradition, people in Ireland carved turnips into spooky faces to ward off wandering spirits. This wonderful Ghost Turnip is on display at the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, and it's guaranteed to stop you in your tracks!

Very much looking forward to getting to Maynooth tomorrow to talk about material worlds and how they reveals the often ‘contested’ realities through the lens of gender and class.

We're at a really scary point in legacy debate were some MPs are presenting extra judicial killings as generally legitimate. If someone maintains the authorities can kill someone on our streets, outside the confined of Art 2 ECHR, they're arguing for tyranny: www.irishnews.com/news/norther...

The British govt has never had much moral authority but where it has seriously miscalculated re Palestine Action is not in proscribing groups fighting for a dehumanized other but the impact of daily watching televised genocide for the last few years on white mc voters. www.bbc.com/news/article...

bbc.comPolice assess Palestine Action post by national security adviser's wifeDowning Street says Sarah Helm, the wife of Jonathan Powell, "does not represent the government in any capacity".

Simply put: as time, individual stories of inhumanity, damning international agency reports, and categorical evidence of genocidal intention are played out on the nightly news and all over social media less people believe supporting Palestinians is bad or wrong regardless of what politicians do.

Having worked at unis in 3 diff countries most students are politicized by context: types of students they are surrounded by & how they perceive their role in soc. This is fundamentally about the uni they go to / course they select / place of uni in society. Most radical have been anthros at Cork.

EDJ edit page continues its reality-defying streak decade after decade:

Behind the shock and whispers at this unnecessarily prolonged process we need to reflect on the victims. Donaldson and his wife did not plead guilty, he claimed the victims were liars, put them through a trial and made many attempts to drag the process out. May he rot. www.bbc.com/news/live/cm...

bbc.comFormer DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson sentenced to 15 years in prison for child sex abuseIn statements read out in court by the judge, one of his victims says she grew up feeling ashamed, while the other says: "Every day I pray God will let me die".

Ofc they are never not at it. Sally Rooney should (and i hope does) sue him. But this is what coloniality looks like - British media normalizing the weaponization of antisemitism to deny genocide and at the same time slandering an entire nation because they don’t buy into those colonial logics.

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

Adam Boulton: "she, in common with a lot of people in Ireland is taking a very strong pro Palestine & I have to say anti Israel & anti Jewish stance" Adam, can you provide evidence that Sally Rooney is taking an anti Jewish stance? Or are you, in fact, lying to smear critics of Israel?

I can’t imagine Sally Rooney is losing sleep over her books being banned in the UK. All it does is highlight the nature of the UK govt’s response to Gaza: outlawing activism, censoring free speech and reinforcing genocide. It won’t do her global sales any harm either. www.rte.ie/entertainmen...

Collective action means exactly that: collective action. If you stand to gain from its fruits, you need to also bear its burdens as far as practicable... Not that picketing is burdensome, it's normally a joyful experience. Some of my best friendships in my Bristol days were forged on picket lines.

Jim Allister either thinks that unionist votes are the only ones that matter or he cannot count as it would have failed under any system. Political unionism is a minority behaving as a ruling class

Different British govt, same old colonial mindset to Ireland. British govts will always protect the state.

A British state cover up of three decades of conflict & their role in it. 'Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said: “For too long, veterans have faced uncertainty over historic investigations, despite serving honourably during the Troubles.' And there we have it - Irish bloodshed has no consequence.

DUP beacon of integrity Carla Lockhart wants ‘profound consequences’ for Michelle O’Neill’s attendance at Garvagh Road, when she was pictured in close proximity to masked men at a protest in Scarva in June THIS YEAR and called it ‘standing with her community.’ www.rte.ie/news/2026/10...

DUP logic has always been based on ‘do what i say not what I do’ but even for Lockhart it takes quite a degree of bare faced hypocrisy to expect repercussions for others but not for yourself.

Just to update people on Eva Gore-Booth and Esther Roper’s graves in Hampstead, which were in a sorry state in August when I visited (first two pics). Good news is that the whole graveyard has been thoroughly cleaned up and the grass has been cut. Hooray!

The graveyard is now in a much better state. Some dead cut grass needed cleared off the grave and especially the picture of Eva was covered in grass. The picture was cleaned and righted. I also removed two dead plant pots (one i had brought in August) and put some new autumn flowers.

It was especially lovely to see the bottom of the gravestone, which was pretty much covered by grass in August. Thinking of Eva and Esther’s less than conventional Theosophist beliefs i love how they made peace with being laid to rest in an Anglican churchyard: ‘Life that is Love is God’

Now onto the V&A whose display of historical jewelry is just tone deaf wild in terms of playing down the violent extraction of colonialism. Indian jewelry presented as ‘The Passion for the Exotic’. At least they haven’t changed their text to pretend Palestine didn’t exist.

View full thread

How this got to the V&A deserves more thorough research than my googling but it appears that it was found in the 1870s in Shannongrove Limerick and somehow came into the possession of an Anglo-Irish gent Charles Howard-Bury b. Charleville Castle, Offaly. It was acq by the V&A in 1948!!

25+ years after independence of the 26 counties and extremely precious ancient archaeological remains are being donated to (or at least acquisitions into) English museums!

Now onto the V&A whose display of historical jewelry is just tone deaf wild in terms of playing down the violent extraction of colonialism. Indian jewelry presented as ‘The Passion for the Exotic’. At least they haven’t changed their text to pretend Palestine didn’t exist.

The focus on the sparkle, detailed ancestral lines, and comments about the grandeur of Anglo-Irish colonial extractors like the Dufferins slightly bypasses what the taking, keeping and dispersal of these jewels meant in a colonial context.

But what really takes the biscuit is the decontextualized presentation of an Irish Bronze Age gold collar. Frontal display is using it as a representation of what gold jewelry mean. Archaeological details only provided behind the object and even then the colonial extraction is unarticulated.

Visited the Ashmolean, when I visit order museums in England I now have my own private game of guessing how much of it is Irish under the guise of ‘British prehistory’ (answer = alot of of the gold!)

One day late for world octopus day, this beautiful example of a painted jar from Crete at the Ashmolean in Oxford (note this was ‘presented by the Cretan govt’ via Sir Arthur Evan’s, the excavator of Knossos. Not sure how much say a govt at that time of great political flux had!).

Someone told an American - who repeated it back to me - that Irish dancing came from ‘during colonialism’ people trying to hide when they were dancing in bars - cos the Brits didn’t like it - so they didn’t move their arms incase soldiers were looking through windows. Best laugh i’d had in ages!

Darach Ó Séaghdha@darach.bsky.social

Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.

We’ve had to listen to some very unimpressive TDs talk shit about public sector workers needing to prove their worth and up their game. Meanwhile the sight of an almost-empty greyhound track and the yelping of mistreated animals gets them humming the national anthem as a tear rolls down their cheek

How do people cope with the state of the trains in England? I can’t remember the last time i got one that wasn’t drastically late, overfull, combining previously cancelled trains. And the COST! The pure stress of living with this must drive ppl insane.
