Alright, I've been on a reading kick this year, so I figured I'd start a book thread with my thoughts and critiques. I'm not literary critic, but I'll give it the ole college try. These are in no particular order of when I've read them this year.

Who invented algebra? And numbers?

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Quincy really leaning into “it’s the Jews’ fault” angle with this one.

Joe Stieb@joestieb.bsky.social

The quincy institute doing multiple events with noted far right lunatic joe kent is wildly irresponsible

Just a reaffirmation of JD Vance’s shift from “America is an idea” to “America is a shared cultural heritage,” i.e. white.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Rally speaker: "Mike Rogers is an American. Abdul has a birth certificate. The birth certificate says he's a citizen of America. You know what? a birth certificate doesn't make you an American."

Might I also remind everyone that a deadly conspiracy theory is also official state policy both domestically and internationally.

A reminder that “The Great Replacement” was the name of the manifesto of the Christchurch terrorist. That is where Trump and his supporters are at this point; openly endorsing a conspiracy theory championed by a mass murdering terrorist.

One of the things I miss the most about my old job was getting to read the emails from schizos who swore on their firstborn that they were under constant surveillance, when they were a mid-40s nobody from bumfuck nowhere.

Translation: JD Vance doesn’t even lift.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

Abdul El-Sayed on JD Vance: "I think America is big enough for all of us. His view of America is small like him. It's about pointing to other people and making the argument that the reason *you* don't have is because of *them.*" El-Sayed came on our pod. It's good: newrepublic.com/article/2168...

Then they’ll say it’s all in service of “combating antisemitism.”

Luke Baumgartner@lbaum94.bsky.social

The insidious way that people promote this is through cherrypicking the “red-green alliance.” They’ll look at how leftists co-op Islamist messages or how some progressive politicians happen to be Muslim then run wild with it.

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

"islamo-communism" is basically a latter-day gloss on "judeo-bolshevism" for the modern conservative, and it has about as little connection with reality

"Extremism research" institutions have oriented their lines of effort around allying themselves with Islamophobic Republicans in Congress and pushing the "civilizational jihad" conspiracy theory.

“Oh, you’re a veteran? How did it feel to be duped into an imperialist endeavor? I don’t care that you never deployed, you’re still a baby killing pawn.”

John C@badsocialism.bsky.social

I do find that many of my progressive and leftist friends are, in fact, kind of incapable of considering that my research on war doesn't mean I think it was fun

Meta should have its assets seized and Mark Zuckerberg thrown in jail.

404 Media@404media.co

NEW: In the immediate weeks before Muse’s launch, Meta engineers found several security vulnerabilities, at least one of which could have allowed malicious users to break outside of Muse’s intended environment and access Meta’s own sensitive databases and services, 404 Media has learned.

Based on the quotes you'd think I just killed someone's dog and single-handedly have the power to sway election results through a skeet. I was also accused of being anti-American and suffering from "unexamined misogyny." Jesus Christ, some of you are insufferable.

Luke Baumgartner@lbaum94.bsky.social

I know this is pessimistic, but if the Democrats do indeed end up sweeping the midterms, it won’t be because of the party’s innovation and campaign creativity. Americans just really fucking hate the GOP.

Call me crazy, but maybe we shouldn't have left data security to guys who call themselves "Big Ballz"

Zack Whittaker@zackwhittaker.com

As data breaches go, this is pretty sizable, significant, and also bafflingly bad in terms of time it took to discover and that the stolen data was unencrypted. News of this breach comes weeks after a huge theft of FBI agents' personal data. Bypass for ad-blockers: web.archive.org/web/20260930...

“Pete Hegseth appoints national security threat and Nazi owner of CSAM machine to important position.”

Social Media Lab@socialmedialab.ca

Failing up ..."Pete Hegseth appoints Elon Musk to US taskforce on future of warfare. A year after his explosive tenure at Doge, the SpaceX CEO is back in the Trump administration’s good graces." www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

One thing that I haven’t seen talked about is that the Claremont Institute’s fingerprints are all over this speech.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hegseth: "We need students of western civilization and the pillars of our republic. Leaders who understand the faith of Jerusalem, the philosophy of anthems -- Athens. The power of Rome, and the freedom of Philadelphia circa 1776."

With all the Hegseth talk, if you’re a journalist and a podcaster that’s going to cover what’s going on in the DoD, please for the love of god, talk to actual veterans.

Insanely good writing by @patrickobrienstrickland.com that I’m proud to have helped contribute to.

Inkstick Media@inkstickmedia.com

"The more stunts Beam pulled, the more alarmingly broad the Klan’s reach became. Toward the end of the decade, Beam and Duke hatched another plan: They would recruit active US military members into the Knights of the KKK." By: @patrickobrienstrickland.com

Hegseth is a deeply insecure man with GWOT-era “cult of the operator” syndrome who will stop at nothing to make sure that it’s everyone else’s problem.

NEW: Trump 2.0 has made extremist views acceptable. In November, candidates will run for critical federal and state-level positions who have expressed racist, pro-militia, anti-vaccine, sexist, antisemitic, and secessionist views. Many have been endorsed by Trump www.wired.com/story/these-...

Hegseth barely made Major

Military Times@militarytimes.bsky.social

Secretary Hegseth announced Tuesday that colonels and captains seeking promotions will undergo a new Joint Warfighter Evaluation. 🔗Link to article in comments ⬇️

Been thinking about the concept of "stochastic parroting" in LLMs and how it applies to expressing extremist ideologies. My working hypothesis is that ideology is essentially dead and we're just living through the slopification of mass politics. I don't know, man; I'm just throwing shit at the wall.
