Ditto. On a related topic, is it better to block these numbers or do the ol’ “stop2end” thing? I know the whole “if you respond they know your number/email is legit” argument, but I’ve never been clear on whether that advice applies to all spam equally or just the shadiest.

Do they even understand how much they’re pissing people off by doing this. Whatever research that convinces them that spamming everyone is all upside is bullshit. It is like they’d rather have all my contact info to sell to other campaigns forever than receive my donation. It sucks.

We had a very nice pumpkin, and then a squirrel decided to claim it. No other pumpkin on the block seems to have been attacked like this. How’d we get so lucky?

Lovely piece. The more I learn in Duolingo, the more aware I am of what I’m not going to learn in Duolingo. But I’m keeping with it because I won’t be letting perfection be the enemy of the sufficient (or proficient, in this case).

A few minutes ago there was a husky with a “Happy birthday” bandana. She got a really exciting new toy, but she didn’t understand carrying it and walking at the same time, so it got put away. Then she bounced around her person as they went down the beach. Baby’s first beach day, I think. :)

An obese bloodhound was lagging behind her person as they walked, trying to pull toward the dryer sand. When her person stopped, though, she pressed against his legs. I imagined she’d a recent rescue, and he’s trying to help her lose weight. It’s hard work for her, though, poor sweetie.

Tragedies like Walker’s are so unnecessary. Medical professionals shouldn’t be scared to do their jobs.

Let's try this again I wrote about * Tierra Walker * , who should be alive, and Ken Paxton, who is one of the reasons why she's not ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...

Highlights from Greensboro Pride today: opening the main stage with my vocal ensemble; the guy who went up and down Elm St. leading a “Donald Trump has a small penis” chant; and the drag king who lip synched to Freddy Mercury while dressed as Sonic the Hedgehog.

It’s a beautiful night for baseball! Never mind that your team is down 13 to 1 in the ninth. The weather is still perfect, and you’re with your friends, and hey, at least they made the playoffs, and who can complain about extra baseball?

I won a pasta salad/potato salad/cole slaw cookoff today, and I can’t shake the imposter syndrome about it because the recipe was from a cookbook and four of my votes came from my family.

Well, I know *I* should use the library more than I do. I’m gonna work on that.

optimisticsoap.bsky.social@optimisticsoap.bsky.social

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

The problem with claiming to be “colorblind” is that the act of ignoring race usually also ends up meaning ignoring racism and its consequences as well. Sometimes that’s precisely the intent.

This is a huge topic for me, too, and there are several stories in the original thread of owners not realizing the cruelty of declawing before they did it. Even in places where it’s not illegal yet, there should be laws requiring vets to disclose a complete explanation of the procedure and risks.

That happened to my mom in the early ‘80s when I was three and my brother was a newborn, and someone told her just to do it for the safety of us small children. But it made the cat insecure and vicious and way more aggressive than she might have been.

My mom was a huge animal lover, and declawing her first (and only — she stuck with dogs after that) cat tore her apart when she learned what she’d done. It was among her life’s biggest regrets. The education needs to be there, and it needs to be coming from vets, not just lay people.

Immigrants do not have to contribute exceptionally to deserve safety Immigrants do not have to permanently grovel to their new country to justify their existence Immigrants are allowed to be just as mediocre, grumpy or homesick as anyone else

Just an editorial PSA from an editor who’s worked on everything from screenplays to dissertations and now trivia… You don’t necessarily have to avoid contractions in your writing. If you’re writing in a casual voice, *please* don’t avoid them. Repress the tiny English teacher in your brain.

Your actual English teachers from the past will thank you. I just read a whole article that was otherwise written informally — first person, slang, etc. — and its studious avoidance of contractions was conspicuous and distracting. Write for your audience. “It’s” and “don’t” aren’t your enemies.

Yup, our MAGA neighbor across the street felt so threatened by the pride flags on our block that he started flying what is apparently a “straight pride” flag all June … which actually resembles the bi flag of you don’t look at it closely, so we were a bit surprised the first time.

This is our new kitten, Humphrey Cheesecake. We didn’t plan to get a new kitten (we’re actually preparing to get an adult dog), but he landed in our laps, and we weren’t about to push him off! Cat Distribution System at work.

These days, there are always multiple reasons a decision by or priority of this administration is horrific, and this piece lays out another (or one that was new to me anyway) on birthright citizenship.

Let's see if we can raise $10,000 today for red state or national queer orgs. Post proof here in the replies that you donated to a red state or national queer organization and I will share. Who's with me? (I can't donate myself because I'm a journalist who covers these orgs)

It's hard to explain to normies how much effort Trump is putting into anti-trans policies. This is like the 12th thing just this week. And there were 12 things the week before, and 12 things the week before that. There will be 12 things next week. This is almost everything the government is doing.
