Ahead of the Milburn Review, I argue that the number of NEETs is a problem long in the making but with recent drivers too. There isn't a single answer: the benefit system should offer more help, we need to look at the jobs market for YP, health, education & work services need joining up etc

I got my hands on the Labour Market briefing this month! It is therefore short! The big picture summary tells you what you *have* to know. But for musings on data quality, and an answer to the question… “Why shouldn’t young people’s first job be in care?” …click through!

Labour market relatively flat. This is +ve resilience given overall economic conditions. But with underlying weaknesses that need tackling: 1m young people are NEET & no progress to Govt's 80% employment rate target. Need more active job search help but also growth & job friendly conditions.

With around one million young people not in education, employment or training, creating more opportunities is urgent. 📣 Employers have a vital role to play, but recruitment depends both on the opportunities available and on young people being able to take them up.

This is the first in a regular series of employer insights produced by L&W for The St Martin’s Group. The series will provide timely, up to date evidence on current skills and employment to inform policy as it develops. 🔍
