Well, this is disappointing. These two planned parking garages would face a major thoroughfare but would make zero contributions to the public realm. The plans don't call for wrapping them with active uses, adding public art, or otherwise activating their surroundings. 🧵
Cleveland Clinic is planning two new, multistory parking structures on Carnegie Avenue in preparation for the opening of major capital projects that will increase the need for parking on its main campus. www.crainscleveland.com/health-care/...
The west garage would go up on the site of the old Cleveland Play House complex, which included their original 1926 theaters and Philip Johnson's polarizing 1983 expansion, all razed by the Clinic in 2023.

They'll be built atop current parking lots, but what nobody at the Planning Commission meeting acknowledged is that those locations were formerly the site of two local landmarks, the Carnegie Medical Building and the Cleveland Play House complex.
The east garage would be built on the site of the art deco Carnegie Medical Building (also known as the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine Building), which was demolished by the Cleveland Clinic in 2009. www.cleveland.com/architecture...

One of America's most walkable school districts might soon lose that distinction — and the country might lose a powerful model of how good school planning can make kids and the communities that surround them healthier, happier, and more independent.

At the start of today's Guardians-Giants game, announcer Matt Underwood couldn't decide whether he wanted to say afternoon or evening, and it came out of his mouth as "afterneen." That's a exceptional portmanteau, and it aligns perfectly with Lewis Carroll's description.
