Public money should be good for workers and for the planet. This panel at Locals Take the Lead looks at how public contracts can get there, with Nagore Alkorta, Federico Martelloni, and Maria Karolina Garmer.

Care and education are the heart of public services. At Locals Take the Lead, Iñigo Arriandiaga, Dorota Spyrka, Aldo Schelvis, and Giorgio Marasà are discussing how municipalities can make sure no one is left without support.

The students’ movement has been challenging Vučić’s regime in Serbia since 1 Nov 2024, when the canopy of a newly renovated train station in Novi Sad collapsed, killing 16 people. Since then, the movement has kept on protesting and building an alternative to Vučić’s regime.

At Locals Take the Lead, we will discuss left-wing local governance, housing, migration and diversity, safe communities, minority languages and self-determination, gender-based violence, food sovereignty, public procurement, care and education, and the ecological transition.

The EU’s foreign office, the European External Action Service (EEAS), was supporting #DISINFO2026, a counter-disinformation conference in Vilnius on 7-8 October. The Trump administration was bothered by panels that referred to the U.S. as a disinformation threat.

The U.S. state department used diplomatic pressure to make the EU and the Lithuanian and Canadian governments pull out of the conference. The French government stayed and reaffirmed support. Kallas folded European values under pressure.
