Nature and politics fan-girl. 🦘 Pretty-much obsessed with the tawny frogmouths I share my backyard with. Voting yes was the least we could do, given everything, yet we couldn’t even fricken manage to do that. Privileged to be living in Meanjin, Australia.

It’s been pissing down here for days. Tawnies are out there in the elements, as is their wont. If you look closely, you can see the Teflonesque nature of Mr Tawny’s plumage. Keep the sound off unless you’re keen to hear a lot of rain as well as some inadvertent Radio National.

I suspect, but couldn’t say for sure, that he’s stretching his right wing out as an umbrella for the chick who still has soft downy feathers and therefore isn’t as well waterproofed.

Nest is now defunct. 🩶 Youngster is spending Day 1 as a big, brave fledging (alongside Mum and Dad of course) in the tree next to the back deck.

I’m loving the energy of this woman being escorted by security out of a Trump rally. Might print it out and put it on my wall. Go you sister.

I think he/she is an only child - quite unusual for this mum and dad. Blending in with dad in the second pic. Again, photos are taken from far away on max zoom (see third pic). I’m a bit in awe of this camera’s oomph given how numpty-friendly it is.

Sorry, I seem to have deleted my original post. Reposting: A bit concerned about all the ‘moth invasion’ posts on social media expressing irritation/ terror/ lack of understanding about the bogong moth migration to the alpine regions at the moment. stories.acf.org.au/flight-of-th...

stories.acf.org.auFlight of the Bogong moth by ACFThere’s a beautiful synergy between the threatened Bogong moth and the critically-endangered Mountain pygmy possum, showing how the lives of our wildlife can intertwine in ways that amaze us.

These lovely moths are SO important to lots of wildlife, but especially to the beleaguered, near-extinct mountain pygmy possum. Have sent emails to ABC News asking them to report/educate people about this vital migration. 🤞🤞🤞

Well, I just definitively spotted one white fluffball of a chick in the nest when dad hopped off to grab a bite to eat! I have no idea how to take a decent night-time photo, so no pics I’m afraid.

Shoutout to anyone out there who takes an interest in my obsession with the tawnies who share this patch with us here. I have zero actual photography skill, and to be honest, I would still post pics of them even if no one else was interested, such is my love for and awe of these lovely wild birds.

I was pleasantly surprised when we visited Paris last year at how many more trees had been planted on their footpaths (they now have double rows of them in many places) compared to when we were living there 20 years ago. So good for a city that’s struggling to manage newly soaring temps in summer.

Ms Tawny is spending her days closer to Dad and the nest at the moment. She is top right, while Dad on the nest is the dark, amorphous lump in the bottom left of the pic.

This came up as a featured photo on my phone from last October. How bloody cute! Can’t wait to meet this season’s little batch of next-gen tawnies 🩶

It was National Threatened Species Day on Monday. One of my kids participates in the National Threatened Species Bake-off each year. This was her contribution this year - a yakka skink cake🧡 If you’re interested, check out other fab entries here on insta: #tsbakeoff2026

I had no idea that plover chicks were so cute! This one had three siblings but they were off with mum at the time. Dad saw off several noisy miner incursions while I was watching.

Heard on Radio National’s economics show yesterday: ‘The Australian Bureau of Statistics doubles what people say they consume in alcohol in order to make it match the amount of alcohol that’s sold.’ Haha!
