I feel like "open world" is one of the most overused selling points in video games. Just because a world is "open" doesn't necessarily mean it's more fun than carefully designed levels. Quite the opposite, most of the time.

I spent years playing games without thinking much about UI. Now that I'm making one, I notice how hard it is to design a decent UI. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames #uidesign

There are currently over a billion possible ship combinations in my game, all resulting in different playstyles. Some are overpowered, some are fun, and some are utter garbage ๐Ÿ˜‚ #shump #gamedev #indiegames #indiegamedev #pixelart #ใƒ‰ใƒƒใƒˆ็ตต

Currently doing some research on the best way of how to implement drop shadows in top down pixel art games. I'm not quite satisfied with mine, but the information online is quite sparse. So, it seems I got to come up with my own solution ๐Ÿคซ #gamedev #pixelart

There are multiple worlds explorable in Leticulus, and each has its own enemies, gimmicks, and secrets. Can't wait for all of you to check them out! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ #shmup #roguelike #indiegame #gamedev #pixelart #ใƒ‰ใƒƒใƒˆ็ตต

Taking a star to the eye must really hurt, especially when your eye is as big as a truck. #pixelart #shmup #roguelike #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart #ใƒ‰ใƒƒใƒˆ็ตต

๐Ÿ‘ Please more: I sincerely love environmental storytelling in games. Don't give me a ton of dialogue explaining how some city was destroyed; just let me walk through it. ๐Ÿ‘Ž Please less: I'm so done with crafting. It'd be ok if it didn't mean collecting junk for hours on end.

I don't know about you, but something pretty messed-up must have happened here #pixelart #shmup #roguelike #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart #ใƒ‰ใƒƒใƒˆ็ตต

Last week was so stressful, and each day filled to the brim with coding for the Game Dev Days build of my game that today, I treated myself with touching some grass. Felt good #indiedev

Here's to an amazing #gddg26! Thanks to everyone who checked out my game; thanks for the amazing feedback, the kind words, and thanks to all the amazing people I had the pleasure of meeting! Also, a very huge thanks to the team for making an event like this even possible! It was a blast! #gamedev

Tomorrow I finally show my game at a local game dev conference, and guess who spent all day fixing bugs he found this morning? Now I'll spend all night testing it again and fixing upcoming bugs. The fun never ends, I suppose... ๐Ÿ˜… #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

Nobody likes burning their fingers. So, on your journey through my game, Leticulus, you might come across these little plants, which help soothe your burns. #indiegames #retro #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart #ใƒ‰ใƒƒใƒˆ็ตต

I noticed I had implemented ways to cure burns and poison in my game, but not a casual way to heal small amounts of HP. So I added this little plant, which, on death, drops HP orbs. #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart #ใƒ‰ใƒƒใƒˆ็ตต

This Saturday, I'm taking part in a game dev event and letting strangers play my game for the first time. What still needs to be done: - Map creation and updating - Deciding what to show/not to show during the demo - Balancing - Testing I still have 4 days. What could possibly go wrong?

It's all about human connection. Would you watch robot football? AI-controlled racing? Android boxing? Maybe once. But without the human aspect, it's boring. There is no context, no struggle, no meaning. Just a void.

I can't stop thinking how wrong the tech bros have understood creativity and creators. Or even just having hobbies. #erliart

Sometimes I'm fiddling around with my code and have no clue what I'm doing, and everything still neatly falls into place. Then there's today, when suddenly not a single line that should make sense does. Time to go for a walk; it is!

Since a main pillar of my game is exploration, I had the questionable idea to add secret areas to each map... like caves! This means, of course, that each map is now twice the work. Yay! ๐Ÿ˜… #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames #retro #pixelart #shmup #roguelike

I love how a day off can be the spark for new ideas in your projects, be it in game dev, writing, drawing, whatever. Because even though you're not physically working, subconsciously you're still on it. Do you know what I mean, or is this just a me-thing? ๐Ÿ˜…

Just wanted to try something out in my game, found a bug, fell into the rabbit hole ... and returned 8 hours later with a mushy brain and twenty more bugs in my pocket to squish next week ๐Ÿค• At least it looks somewhat pretty, right? #indiedev #gamedev #indiegamedev #bullethell #pixelart

Instead of removing that (which would mean also removing a big part of the fun, in my opinion), I spent all day attacking friction points. It was a lot of work, but definitely worth it. 3/4

Don't get me wrong, I'm still not done here. The FPS are still slightly below 60, and I found further friction points. But working on them would result in a big overhaul of the current system. I don't want to tackle that on a weekend, haha. Today, I'd rather continue with smaller tasks ๐Ÿ˜ƒ 4/4

This should happen rarely, but players may stumble upon item combinations that not only decrease reload time but also allow them to shoot additional bullets. That way, they may spawn immense amounts of projectiles. 2/4

Spent all day fixing the (pixel-perfect) camera in my game. (Lots of tiny issues nobody would notice but me) Still not perfect, but way better than before. Anyway, need a break. My brain is mush now #gamedev #indiedev

Made a little test room. I'm thinking about giving the statue in the middle some in-game use, like handing the player rare items but also cursing them. What do you think? Or do you have a better idea? ๐Ÿ˜€ #pixelart #gamedev #retro #indiedev #indiegame

You are up to date.
