I’ll be on the telly tonight, in case any Aussies are at a loose end at 9pm (Crime Night on the ABC). Pleased to report that Julia Zemiro is just as lovely in person as you would expect.

I don’t make a habit of watching many government inquiry hearings so I’m not sure what’s normal, but hearing Coalition senators act like lawyers for the PBCC, interjecting on their behalf to object to questions constantly, felt quite odd www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Many people don’t realize that many people in the tech industry, especially in its upper echelons, have developed a deeply harmful and delusional worldview they’re trying to impose on everyone else. That’s at the root of their misguided view of where AI is going. disconnect.blog/the-media-ha...

Adam Becker@adambecker.bsky.social

@aoc.bsky.social just put out a great statement on AI. Refreshing to see a major politician on the left nail this. "Silicon Valley billionaires want us to believe that Al robots will destroy humanity. But the biggest threat to humanity are the tech oligarchs themselves." 🎯

Very worth reading this comprehensive overview of a lot of elements of the belief systems behind the hype that are less covered than they should be, in spite of many working to shift this

I’m hanging out for @alexgibneyfilm.bsky.social’s Musk, but Going Clear (and the book, and so much more from survivors) has been available long enough now that it honestly surprises me how many people don’t have any qualms about watching TC films. Saddened that Iñárritu cast him.

Anyway, good piece in the Times here. (It still happens!) People are starting to talk very weird about AI on this site, and honestly it's kind of distressing seeing people fall into the abyss thinking it's alive. That ain't good. The rest of us should expect boring bad stuff and guard against it.

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

In her testimony to the antisemitism royal commission, Segal couldn’t name a single example of antisemitism in ABC or SBS coverage of Israel, let alone in any local stories. That didn't stop her from attacking the broadcasters and calling for a new regulator.
