I’m trying out making tiny Baduk/Go boards using bead mosaic, eventually I’ll use epoxy to make them into earrings or pendants. These are just test patterns glued on paper. Still need them to look a lot neater for jewelry, but it would be cool to make ones with Tsumego or common shapes!

The Baduk tournament in Oakland on Sunday has over 40 participants, exciting! I’ve been teaching a bunch of kids in an afterschool program who are going to play in it, we’ll see how they do at sitting through it lol

We made a QR code for the East Bay Go Players website out of Baduk stones at the Go class in Oakland last week. It scans!

A neat bit of Japanese orthography. Japanese uses three scripts: 1. Kanji (chinese characters), basically for native roots and chinese loanwords. 2. Hiragana, mostly for case endings and verbal inflections 3. Katakana, mostly used for (English) loanwords. But katakana have other uses...

Gonna start making these stop-motions from games I play, I got this win against a 1 kyu with a 2 stone handicap, it was a swindle but I’m happy with it!

Call us ‘the boys’. Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—having little or no money in our purse, and nothing particular to interest us on land, we thought we would drive around a little and see the back-in-town part of the world.

Decided to stand outside the door of the ice field office in San Francisco at 630 Sansome street, just to see what would happen. It’s been an hour and a half, a security guard came out and told me the cops were coming and I should leave. I’m on the sidewalk!

We need justice for Luis Alberto Castillo Rivera! How was a man with ZERO criminal record and who came here LEGALLY sent to Guantanamo where they were "only taking the worst of the worst"?! How many other innocent men were taken?

We only know this man is in Gitmo because Noem tweeted a propaganda photo that included him and his sister saw it. He has no criminal record. He entered the US in January and immediately made an appointment with CBP to claim asylum. They sent him to a concentration camp bc of his basketball tattoo.

I'm trying out a new rating system at the Baduk club I run, I'm hoping for feedback on the algorithm. New rating = old rating + .04*(opponent's rating - player's rating) + [4*(# of handicap stones given by player)] ± 16 Initially all players will start at 1000 regardless of their dan/kyu rank.

I learned Baduk from my Dad, became passionate about it through watching Hikaru no Go, then played in a club in college, then started a club when I moved back to the East Bay. Now I’m teaching kids to play in an afterschool program, and started showing them Hikaru no Go. Feels very full-circle!

My dream for Baduk is that I could bring a board and a folding table to any public park/roomy sidewalk, and get a game within an hour. What would that take? 1: Baduk becoming 20x more popular 2: cities investing in water fountains and public bathrooms, so people can spend time in public spaces

Before Douglas Adams was Stanislaw Lem, a Polish author of philosophy and satirical science fiction. Because his writing was full of wordplay written in Polish, the translator Michael Kandel had to be incredibly creative to convey the humor in English. Thanks for doing that Mike, you’re a genius.

Thesis: time is money Antithesis: time is a flat circle Synthesis: money is a flat circle Praxis: getting thrown out of the car dealership for paying with nickels

Baduk clubs I can get to in under an hour from Oakland, that I know of: Berkeley Go club Telegraph Go Club UC Berkeley Go Club Silicon Valley Go club Tech Time Go club San Francisco Go Club Are there any I’m missing? Definitely feel privileged to have so many options!

I need to keep telling myself playing 9x9s on my phone will make me a better baduk player. Surely I’m retaining something and not just making the same mistakes over and over.

I can feel myself becoming bearish about the AI industry, it’s like waking up from a dream and realizing what you thought was a life-changing revelation isn’t actually that interesting.

I love Go but it’s such a doomed name for a board game SEO-wise, English speakers need to bite the bullet and switch to calling it baduk or weiqi.

You are up to date.
