This! Our university is having a second consecutive year of cuts and layoffs, in a democratic supermajority state where there was zero interest in providing party funding for us even in comparison with the other state universities in Illinois. Research funding has cratered. The Democrats shrug.

Democrats have trifecta control of government in 16 states; but not one of them has done what Republicans in Iowa and Florida have done in pumping millions of dollars into the humanities. ballotpedia.org/State_govern...

Melody has three legs, and jumping etc puts a lot of pressure on her spine, so yesterday she got muscle relaxers that made it hard for her to get up the stairs. I slept on the couch so when she woke up in the night she wouldn't get frightened. Anyway I just woke up...

It's funny hearing centrists accuse the left of being soft on misogyny right after they tried to force Andrew cuomo down everyone's neck against mamdani. (FTR I always got a shitty Fetterman vibe from Platner and he sucks shit)

"The president wrote that unless he was free to decide the center’s trajectory, he had “no interest in continuing what could only be a hopeless journey.”" Sadly he just meant the journey of fucking up the Kennedy center. But for an exciting second I thought he meant...yknow

Have the Democrats figured out the all important issue of whether it's ok to listen to Hasan yet? Maybe if they do they can find some time to actually oppose the war in Iran? You know, once they have the important stuff covered.

Matt wrote the definitive account of the making of Deadwood, The Deadwood Bible, which also has some of the best critical appraisals of the show too. And his reviews have been required reading for me for years. Unbelievable that he would be laid off but hopefully he lands on his feet. By his books!

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

The assumption built in to the way tech people talk about this stuff is the idea that all of this simply has to happen, that it is inevitable. So that nobody in power anywhere feels emboldened to say, we actually don't have to do this, we don't have to set the earth on fire to make ai celebrity porn

🗣️ "We thank the @IEA for pointing out in their 2026 report that we’re going to need 50% more investment in our electricity grids before the end of the decade if we’re actually going to meet the demand of this time." Google's Amanda Peterson Corio at the 2026 #IEAMinisterial 👇

And we don't have to set aside hundreds of years of pedagogical expertise to make way for the new "tool" in writing that makes everybody sound the same and say the same boring shit.

Democrats really are just Charlie Brown taking yet another run at the football. No thanks to the Democratic leadership themselves, you have these feral animals by the balls, you don't call a timeout now to give them the chance to regroup, you keep going. I mean, Tom Homan, Jesus Christ.

Q: The demand was to get ICE and CBP out. To replace Bovino with Tom Homan...do you think that's a satisfactory change? TIM WALZ: "I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt. ...My hope is that Tom Homan is different...that he is a true law enforcement professional."

The New York Times is less significant than you think.

we can chalk it up to youth and inexperience but the biggest mistake the mamdani campaign made was winning by 8.8% and not 1.5%, which is the margin needed for the media to say it’s a total mandate

Cuomo was always a real shitbag so it's good to see him just completely give in to it in the dying moments of his public life

Justin Baragona@justinbaragona.bsky.social

So here's Andrew Cuomo reacting to Maria Bartiromo wondering if Mamdani will "change the look of New York" and have Muslim women "completely covered up," telling her that Mamdani "doesn't understand New York culture" because he has "dual citizenship" and "he's a citizen of Uganda."

But I was told young men are all fascists and the only way to appeal to them is by going to the right and also inventing a center Joe Rogan in an expensive lab. I wonder what kind of lesson there is for the Democrats in all this?

Prem Thakker ツ@premthakker.bsky.social

85% of young men support Zohran Mamdani. 79% of young women support Zohran Mamdani. 67% of Jewish people aged 18-44 support Zohran Mamdani. 65% of Black people aged 18-44 support Zohran Mamdani. Would you have guessed *any* of that with how the media has covered all this?

Kai's essay on Satin Island and enactive cognition in this collection is very innovative and helpful for thinking about how we read urban space through literature
