Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

This is exactly what I've been up to this past year at NPR -- making prototypes of what an audience facing archive of the Tiny Objects on the Tiny Desk can look like! It's the object of my desire ;) since day one and an amalgam of all my interests: archives, digital memorialization & creative tech!

So excited and honored to be the guest on the latest episode of Sleeping With Celebrities, as the wonderful @johnmoe.bsky.social and I drone on about the history of the Tiny Desk, with an emphasis on the doodads and tchotchkes that line the shelves. Sweet dreams, friends!

i can’t believe i paid thousands of dollars to my alma mater only to lose all my course materials that i would frequently revisit even after a year since graduating

i’ve noticed that exhilarating work is produced as a result of the canadian government’s funding for the arts. lately every time i look up music / film boom funded by some government grant. meltt/blue heron

kinda miss my favorite pastime: going through the entirety of testudo, my school’s course registration system, and seeing literally every single department’s course offerings. the thrill of seeing an Interesting Class and Taking it

Pretty concerning that this is increasingly becoming a tactic of the elite class to go after journalistic outlets by trying to sue them to death

WIRED@wired.com

A statement from WIRED leadership.

the radio / sound exhibit at cooper hewitt is sublime. more than the objects themselves, the labeling and arrangement of those objects was so beautiful! and those blue tables… also, got to see some of my inspiration for my digital decay thesis for grad school in person!

I guess we don’t talk nearly enough about music anymore bc I seldom know who to send a tiny desk invite to based on their likes

going to be using “made up words from consulting firms” a lot

Nick Sousanis@nsousanis.bsky.social

all of this. when my uni announced our 4 pillars I just about choked: ai, careers, curriculum of the future (?!), & student success - nothing about learning, growth. Nothing about our community. Just made up words from consulting firms. We're throwing away what we could be to check off ticks...

This is absolutely hilarious and deserves a Veep-style TV adaptation.

It's stunning how ignorant the DOGE bros were who were sent into agencies. Justin Fox cannot even articulate in his own words what his "present understanding of DEI" is: he can't even formulate a coherent sentence about it. I wouldn't hire him for basic tech support. #NEH youtu.be/jomaMvItnew?...

the part where it links Reddit users across communities…its upsetting how Not Hard the methodology is. They practically prompt engineered their way to deanonymization. The prompts are v interesting. made me Actually See the bad side of how good it is at turning unstructured data into structured data

Florian Ederer @florianederer.bsky.social

Large-scale online deanonymization with LLMs shows how easily pseudonymous users can now be re-identified from unstructured text alone. When discussing our EJMR paper at NBER SI 2023 Catherine Tucker argued that rising compute would soon erode online anonymity. The future may already be here.

there are difficult journalistic ethics questions here, but it seems like these techniques could generate fascinating leads and recruitment efforts

i feel this generally honestly that i have to put disclaimers and make everything lukewarm i miss ruthless scathing writing

Dr Abeba Birhane@abeba.blacksky.app

i’m tired of every paper (even critical ones) on societal impact of AI starting by both-siding the “benefits” and risks/harms of AI in academia, i would like us to arrive at a collective reckoning that we don’t need to play both sides. it's totally legit to clearly state just the harms. period

I will say im the type of person who prefers critique to pick my (design) work apart, so that I can grow. I’ve kinda wanted a mentor like the guy from Whiplash. but I know what to filter out & what to work on bc I’ve developed a solid eye & wont Completely Crumble. I can confidently argue wrt design

on the other hand when I was doing Actual Academic research I just couldn’t tell what was bad critique/things done in bad faith bc I just hadn’t whetted a good eye for solid research. still working on it.
