🌱 #thicktrunkTuesday Another one from Sheffield Park, a @nationaltrust.org.uk property in Sussex. This one was sadly struck by lightning but has been left standing, providing structure and habitat. I’m off to the Royal Academy to immerse myself in summer scenes from the South of France.

🌱. #mushroomMonday #fungifriends How about this for a dramatic mushroom. A search tells me it is a Beefsteak fungus or Oxtail mushroom and its botanical name is Fistulina hepatica. It is growing on a huge oak just inside the staff gate at Wisley.

🌱 #SundayYellow Sadly no volunteering for me today because Storm Boelo has shut Wisley even though the BBC weather app shows a sunny day with moderate wind. Oh well! I will use the time to collect the leaves off the lawn for compost.

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny, weather beaten garden so it’s a bit different this week. Full description in Alt text. It’s another day of rain so I will be sheltering indoors in my ‘studio’. It’s actually my dining room but has been taken over by sewing and craft supplies.

🌱 #foliageFriday As Storm Austen batters the UK, Wisley is closed to staff, volunteers and visitors and I shall be bunkered down in my cosy little house. It will be an opportunity to do some stitching. Stay safe and have a good day.

🌱 #insectThursday Look closely at this beautiful Dahlia and you might spot a tiny critter. Helpfully, I have provided a closeup. I have more training this morning (trees with Jonathan) and later a science lecture on soil.

🌱 #roseWednesday Still flowering beautifully in the Wisley Rose Garden is this gorgeous one called ‘Simply the Best’. We had training from Oliver who looks after the roses. He explained that the roses did well in the heat and drought although the perennials didn’t. More roses will be planted.

🌱 #BlueSkyMonday Full of berries and standing proudly in Wisley’s Wildlife Garden against a blue sky is Crataegus x lavaellii Carrierei. It’s going to be a Wisley week for me with three sessions of training and a Science lecture. The longed for rain is due to arrive so I might be wet too!

🌱 #SundayYellow Spotted in the Wisley car park, one of my favourite #wildflowers, Linaria vulgaris or Common Toadflax. I’m off to Wisley’s Hilltop to volunteer this morning. Looking forward to seeing my colleagues.

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny garden. Autumn is really settling in but there are still delights. An early start for me as I am off to Sheffield Park with my Bestie and the RHS Gardens Club, an organisation for present and past staff, students and volunteers.

More #flowersonFriday from the Celebration of Flowers in the church of St Martin in the Fields. (Not a whiff of martini in the air!)

When I am at Wisley, I often park next to a log pile. It is worth a look because I spot fungi. When I did my tour on Tuesday I saw this. #fungiFriday #fungiFriends

🌱 #flowersonFriday A surprise spotted on my tour this week, Magnolia delavayi in flower to the delight of the group. I’m off to London to see the flowers in St Martini in the Field.

🌱 #clematisThursday Tumbling over rocks at Wisley is the wonderful Clematis terniflora. I look forward to seeing it every October and it never disappoints.

🌱 #roseWednesday One of the Persica roses growing on the RHS Wisley Trials field. This one is called Rosa ‘Jojo Peach’. Isn’t it lovely? Sadly my planned trip today has been cancelled because my SiL has Covid. There seems to be a lot of it about.

🌱 #thinktrunkTuesday Standing on the curve of a road through Hyde Park. I wonder how many people have passed under its canopy. Busy day ahead. Tour this morning and this afternoon I have been invited (as a contributor) to a celebration of the exhibition Wisley “Wisley then and now” in the Old Lab.

🌱 #SundayYellow A short video of a happy #weebee in Wisley’s World Food Garden which is where I am heading this morning. It is the RHS celebration of growing and eating this weekend with cooking demonstrations and talks about growing food so I think we will be busy!

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny garden. The first picture shows a view of my tiny garden from an upstairs window. It is one of my happy places. The seasons are changing and we have had some welcome rain.

🌱 #flowersonFriday I hope you enjoy this short video of Wisley’s Equinox borders at their peak now, full of what used to be called Asters.

🌱 #insectThursday A beautiful pink Zinnia for you this morning. If you look closely, there is a tiny fly on the petals. I have zoomed in on the second picture so you can see it clearly. I have a friend coming for lunch. She is the only person on the planet that has known me all my life!

🌱 #roseWednesday A rose called ‘Golden Smiles’ for you on a very wet (but very welcome) rainy Wednesday. I’m luckily not doing a tour today and can stay at home, dry and warm.

🌱 #magentaMonday Gorgeous “Morning Glory” flowers for you this morning. When I lived in Johannesburg as a child it was thought of as a pernicious weed, like we think of Bindweed. Perception is a mysterious thing! Bulb planting today with a bit of a rain dance/prayer added.

🌱 #SundayYellow The seasons are definitely changing and there is a bit of a chill this morning. Still no rain though, sadly. I’m off to do my volunteering shift at Wisley’s Hilltop and hope I will have enough energy at the end to visit the new exhibition in the Old Lab, “Wisley Then and Now”.

#postboxSaturday Some people are so clever and so generous sharing their talent. This is a local postbox with an autumnal topper. Enjoy!

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny garden this week. Description in Alt text. Flu and Covid vaccines later so I will be taking it easy today.

🌱 #flowersonFriday It has been worth the wait for Dahlias to flower. This one is in Wisley’s Exotic Garden. So good to see the raindrops on the petals too. I’m heading off to buy some more bulbs.

🌱 #insectThursday #weebee So much furriness in this picture taken in Wisley’s Hilltop World Food Garden. I am back at Wisley this morning for the quarterly staff and volunteer update because I always like to know what is going on! We seem to have had a few drops of rain overnight but we need more!

🌱 #roseWednesday I wish I had the ability to age as beautifully as this rose! We had a small bit of rain overnight, nowhere near enough though. Yesterday I planted lots of crocus bulbs but I am planning to plant more.

Here is who I spent time with yesterday at Wisley’s Hilltop. Isn’t he cute? #birdsof2026 #robin It’s the start of a lovely quiet week although who knows what opportunities might arise.

🌱 #SundayYellow Full of pollen but looking for more! I took this picture last Sunday in Wisley’s Hilltop World Food Garden. I wonder what I will see today during my volunteering session. It’s set to be a beautiful autumn day with perhaps a chance of some rain later. 🤞

Two for #postboxSaturday both taken on separate trips to London this week. The first is a very dirty but very old one in West Hampstead and the second, much newer and smarter in Hyde Park complete with a fancy lamppost and beautiful tree.

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny garden. It has been such a busy week! Two training sessions at Wisley and a Volunteer’s Thank You tea party, three trips to London and a visit to very special friends with lunch on their roof garden. Not much time to garden but the flowers keep coming.

🌱 #flowersonFriday Spotted in West Hampstead yesterday, a huge Oleander bush covered in pink flowers. I used to think it was too tender to grow outside in Britain but I have seen a few examples in London this summer, looking beautiful and coping well with the heat and drought.

🌱 #insectThursday I took the picture of flowers in Wisley’s Hilltop World Food Garden but when I looked at it I noticed a critter so zoomed in and this is what was lurking, a Tarnished Plant bug with a heart shape on its back.

🌱 #roseWednesday Isn’t this lovely? It was growing in the garden outside St Mary le Strand church in London. Inside the church was the Flower Festival but I think this outshone the displays. Today is the annual Wisley Volunteer Thank you day. We start with activities and then a tea party.

🌱 #thicktrunkTuesday Another of Wisley’s “dead” trees which has been left and carved into a celebration of bees. Tour guide training with Jonathan this morning and then to London to see the Flower Festival in St Mary le Strand because of a prompt by @ianvisits.co.uk

🌱 #BlueSkyMonday As we drift towards the end of Summer and Sunflower season, the BBC Weather App describes today’s weather as “Sunny and calm” which could also be a description of how I am feeling. I have a quiet day ahead of a very busy week.

🌱 #SundayYellow I took this picture in Wisley’s Hilltop World Food Garden last Sunday. The Zinnias have certainly provided a show for late summer. I wonder what I will spot this morning during my volunteering session. It is predicted to be dry………..again!

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny garden. Some of the summer flowers are still giving a beautiful display but there are definite signs of autumn. It’s predicted to be a warm, sunny week with no significant rain.
