TIL: YARD as in “enclosed area” (cognate to gird and garden) is from a different proto indo European root as YARD the unit of measurement (from word meaning “staff” or “rod”).

Doing the usual Saturday kid activities with car rather than cargo bike because visiting family coming along. Definitely easier to carry a lot of shit but none of the pride and pleasure of #carryshitolympics

Just attended my first local Safe Streets meeting and man what a joy to be engaged with pushing for real, palpable change at the most micro level. A crosswalk here, a better curb cut there, a new stop sign there, a bike lane.

Big day for multimodal activities. Had Joe the mobile Bike fixer pick up my rad bike for service, then had to teach so took the Aventon to UW (and dropped it at the UW bike shop for brake work). Then bus to lake city to pick up the bike from joe (by then at his next job). Then bike home.

Speaking of which: getting off the 75 or 77 bus at 125thst/20th Ave puts you in the middle of a very long stretch with no crosswalks at all. Not good, Seattle, esp given all the recent work to put PBLs along 125th.

Our brave new world (from a colleague): “Apologies for responding so late. I tried a new ai-enhanced email app system to manage emails, and it turned out to be a disaster. I am back to using the regular app for emails, and I am trying to catch up with so many messages I missed in this period.”

I have put 12000 miles on my Rad Runner plus and would like to ride the thing until it give out. But the company is making this very hard. Ordered new battery in July and it still hasn’t arrived with no est ship date. New chargers are seemingly permanently out of stock. No way to run a business

Truly I love this bike. It does everything for me and I have gotten so much more value than the $2000 I paid for it 4 years ago (+cost of maintenance). I want this company to persevere. But alas.

John was in a “special needs program run by the school district. It was called NEST, for Nurturing Empathy, Safety and Trust, and aimed at helping students experiencing intensive behavioral and social skill challenges. Nickerson said he struggled trying to learn from home during the pandemic.”

Having never watched a full soccer game in my life (in person or on television) I have now gone to five college soccer games since late Aug (4 UW and 1 Seattle U) thanks to my unexpectedly sportsball obsessed child. And it’s delightful!

““K.M.K.s attorneys wrote that her opponent in the wrestling match, who was “stronger &more powerful,” touched her inappropriately.” One prob. shouldn’t be wresting if one can’t deal w/strong, powerful opponents&close touch. (Ofc If there was misconduct, investigation should follow in specific case)

seattletimes.comGirl asks Supreme Court to block WA state rules allowing trans athletesThe high court has upheld bans on transgender athletes on girls’ and women’s sports teams. It has not said whether states can allow them to participate.

I had a dream that I was at a lecture and I kept finding myself laying down with my head stuck through the back of my chair onto the one behind and my legs on the one in front of me and being embarrassed, laboriously sitting up, and then finding myself like that again. Maybe because…I was in bed.

“Ethan was the passenger on his friend’s Class 3 e-bike when it was rear-ended by a car, killing both boys.” Sure, some common sense rules about class 3 e-bikes and kids make sense. But for gods sake, anecdotes like this are about problems with cars first and foremost.

Love it

Amazon users are discovering a bizarre "About You" page that reveals what the company thinks it knows about them One woman found Amazon had determined she "has flat buttocks"

#weekwithoutdriving There are so many terrible crosswalks. In the wrong place. Not enough. With buttons you have to push but which are hard to reach. Curb cuts missing or awkward or in wrong place. And highways cutting through cities that make any kind of crossing impossible except at limited points

#weekwithoutdriving Transit is essential, but it only really works with micromobility: bikes, trikes, cargo bikes, e-bikes, scooters. People often need to be able to autonomously get to/from places transit doesn’t go (and where transit shouldn’t be expected to go).

#weekwithoutdriving I am so fortunate to really not have to drive in my regular daily life. With a kid, the cargo bike is what makes it possible. Transit in Seattle is really not up to the task.

Point to point. Easy parking. Predictable length of journey. All the things people tend to value in cars (but more so—easier parking, avoiding traffic). Possible only because my city has good enough bike infrastructure to feel safe and mostly frictionless.

Shout out to the ASUW Bike shop on the Seattle campus (just for folks with UW ID card, but that’s ~100,000 people). Good work, and WAY cheaper than commercial bike shops.

Why is it that these scam/junk journal “calls for papers” emails are always justified (ie to left and right margins)? That alone is usually the first clue that it’s junk.
