Great to see this, but important to recognise that we have been advocating for a long time for this (parents particularly). it took a parliamentarian experiencing the challenges of trying to be diagnosed formally with ADHD and treated to actually get action #politas www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...

Who is paying the price of not planning for population ageing? While the sandwich carers are saving the system billions they are overstretched and exhausted. If they burn out, the whole system will fall over. #politas www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...

Tasmania’s population growth is almost entirely from migration, most of whom need somewhere to live. In the past, when natural increase dominated growth, additional housing wasn’t immediate. #politas www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07...

abc.net.auEven where the population isn't booming, houses are in short supplyDespite having the slowest growing population in the country, Tasmania is still battling rising homelessness and an ever-tightening rental market.

Any future population growth for Tasmania will be from migration, but housing needs differ from those arriving and where to those leaving and where from, as the age profile and purpose for migration differ. A demographic lens is required to inform housing needs. #politas

Almost 1 in 3 households are occupied by lone persons. Over half of them are aged 65 years or older. As the population continues to age, there will be higher turnover of housing, but likely a mismatch between supply and demand. #politas

Over-capacity schools? If a demographic lens had been used to predict changes in demand, better planning for schooling provision by age/region would have been possible. #politas Tasmania is now well past "peak child" and the number of school aged children will continue to decline into the future.

No surprises here. With an economy skewed to industries reliant on discretionary income and exposed to external risks such as interest rates and the global economy, the flow on will be considerable. Diverify the economy, have a 21st century vision, #politas www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07...

Actually, #politas what needs to be done for a vibrant hospitality industry is increase the potential for higher discretionary income for locals which means ⬆️ education outcomes ⬆️ higher skilled jobs ⬆️ innovation/R&D investment ⬆️ industry diversification &productivity www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07...

abc.net.auBars getting 'squeezed' as costs go up and Hobartians can't pay, tourism body saysThere are questions around the future of Hobart's nightlife after the abrupt closure of some of the capital city's most-loved institutions due to challenging trading conditions.

If more Tasmanians were educated, skilled and employed in secure employment, then their disposable income would provide for a vibrant hospitality industry not dependent on seasonal tourists.

The unintended consequences of the Chalmers budget will be long lasting… from the reduced health rebate for older Australians, to the prioritising of onshore applicants for permanent visas to the NDIS revised ‘functional capability’ assessment… to name a few. Bandaid policy on the run….

There will be demographic implications if young people are prevented from forming social and healthy relationships at university. Delayed partnering is already a contributor to the decline in the fertility rate - eventually there will be fewer people to enrol at uni. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03...
