1/2 Today I delighted in "ultimatum", a favorite poem from a favorite poet, Fernando Pessoa (actually, his Alvaro de Campos heteronym). Maybe I see a pre-cybernetics complex systems thinking (even if Pessoa couldn't have known then that means are likely not characteristic in complex systems).

2/3 It reminds me that Complexity and Network Science are still advancing notions put forward in Systems Science, by George Klir (and others) with his General Systems Problem Solver (GSPS). While we have since advanced a lot in both modelling frameworks and statistical and information measures of...

3/3 prediction performance and parsimony, GSPS still provides an unmatched unifying notational and mathematical language to work on system representation, model inference and validation, and parsimonious theory development (metasystem study). www.google.com/books/editio...

1/2 Wonderful book to learn about the influence of India on planetary culture. Amazing Barnes and Noble edition too. My only criticism is that it is a bit anglo-centric...For instance, European influence in India goes straight from Rome and Greece to London. www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-golden...

2/2 Vasco da Gama is a sentence. Despite the importance of e.g. Alfonso de Albuquerque and followers in undermining the influence middle-eastern powers in India, and trade in the indian ocean being dominated by Portuguese ships and currency for a century and half (until the Dutch control Malacca)

Averages can make measles risk look safer than it is. In our new @NatureMedicine paper, we found that school-level transmission potential crossed the epidemic threshold in 2022 to 2023. The committee reviewing US measles elimination status met this month. PAHO decides in November. Our new paper in @NatureMedicine shows this wasn’t sudden. It was visible years ago, in data nobody was looking at. 🧵

Howard Pattee will celebrate his 100th birthday in October, and a group of his collaborators and former students will mark the occasion with a one-day symposium at Binghamton University on October 15th. Attend in person or virtually.

Very honored to speak at Alife later this summer. So excited about it and will likely recontextualize some classical systems science work from Pattee, Rosen, Klir, and Conrad with current-day advances in #networkmedicine, #AI, #complexsystems, and #systemsbiology.

ALIFE Conference@alifeconf.bsky.social

🎤 Meet our #ALIFE2026 keynote speaker: Luis M. Rocha (Binghamton University)! "Canalizing Dynamics as a Network Mechanism for Collective Decision, Control, Modularity, and Abstraction in Living Systems." 📅 Regular registration ends July 15. Register now and save a few Canadian dollars!

2/2 I will argue that #DigitalTwins in #biomedicine must simplify and provide causal models for actionable explanation. I present our work on multiscale models of disease, which combine machine learning, multilayer networks and discrete dynamical systems to characterize multiscale disease factors.
