Can NLP tools categorise word types across languages? In paper led by @lottiegasp.bsky.social, 105 linguists tagged parts of speech across 52 language varieties. Results varied significantly, showing why multilingual methods matter in clinical language analysis. πŸ§ͺπŸ§ πŸ“ˆ redenlab.com/publication/...

🫢 How do we then support children identified as having language difficulties? πŸ”— In my thesis I show how we can explore causal mechanisms underlying language development. And that these could inform language interventions. πŸ‘€ Stay tuned for results coming from those causal studies... 11/12

πŸ”Ž We made two of these predictor sets available for researchers to use. 1️⃣ Ask parents of 2-3yos these 5 questions 2️⃣ Use the code we provide to estimate children's likelihood of later language challenges 3️⃣ Invite those children to take part in research studies github.com/lottiegasp/l... 9/12

πŸ“ˆ We need predictors that can identify true cases of both low and typical language outcome. (High sensitivity AND specificity) ⏱️ Screening approaches must be feasible for widespread administration. (Not a survey of 100s of questions for parents) πŸ” Results need to replicate. 5/12

I identified the issue that: πŸ”Ž we do not know how to identify young children with language disorders (At least not accurately enough across the whole population to justify population-wide screening) 3/12

I argue that: πŸ‘Άβž‘οΈπŸ§’We need EARLY identification of LATER outcomes Global language at 2-3y is not stable enough to reflect persisting language skills. (Many late talkers catch up). So we need to test early predictors (0-3y) against robust middle/late childhood language outcomes (4y+) 4/12

In my thesis background chapter, I summarised research showing that: ✴️ About one in 10 children has a language disorder ✴️ Language disorders have far-reaching impacts ✴️ Language disorders are unknown, under-researched and under-serviced 2/12

Researchers can use these questions to recruit children into their research. Or in studies where it is only feasible to collect a very brief snapshot of children's language. The GitHub linked below shows you how 2/3 github.com/lottiegasp/l...

The best ways to identify most young children with language disorder are still to ask parents questions πŸ“, or for a clinician to observe the child πŸ‘€. Here is a super short set of questions you can ask parents to identify 2-3-year-olds likely to have later language difficulties! 3/n

Lottie Gasparini@lottiegasp.bsky.social

⭐ NEW TOOL FOR PREDICTING LANGUAGE OUTCOMES ⭐ In 2 previous studies we identified sets of 5-7 questions we can ask parents when their child is 2-3yo that can predict >70% of kids with language difficulties at 11y. This is now available as a tool for researchers: github.com/lottiegasp/l... 1/13

We combined a genetic measure 🧬 with parent survey questions πŸ“ to see how well they predicted individuals' language πŸ’¬ at 11 years. The genetic measure did not reliably improve predictive accuracy 2/n

Today's quick update [Oct 27]: - After 500+ days under siege, Elfashir (red) has fallen to the RSF; ethnically motivated, door-to-door mass killings carried out by RSF. - RSF forces executed civilians as they fled the city; thousands estimated killed. #KeepEyesOnSudan

This news is about as bad as it gets. After over 550 days of SIEGE, #Elfasher has now been taken by the Rapid Support Forces (a rebranded Janjaweed, who committed the 2003-5 genocide in Darfur)... and the violence that has followed is horrific. www.bbc.com/news/article...
