Man I miss Sugimori's original artstyle. When I was a kid and thinking Pokemon was getting lamer (which I don't entirely agree with now) I think I was mostly frustrated by the change in artstyle. I really liked the less polished, more rugged look in the early games.

(I say "don't entirely agree" because I no longer agree that pokemon of that era was lame, but I do think current pokemon is lame for entirely different reasons)

Having played Sun and Ultra Moon back to back I have to say I'm extremely frustrated with Ultra's story. They didn't change much, but they gutted all of the best parts of the original story and robbed it of its emotional core.

Looking at Ultra Moon in a vacuum and not comparing it to the vanilla game, the new Necrozma-centered story would rank it to be a pretty run of the mill generic Pokemon game story, significantly worse than Unova, and arguably worse than Hoenn and Kalos. Probably closer to Kanto if I'm being honest.

Imagine if instead of Black2White2, we got Ultra BlackWhite Which retold the story but severely pulled back on N's story and instead focused on Ghetsis and retooled the story to focus on his shenanigans with Kyurem, while removing the parts of the story involving how he groomed N for his purposes

By making the plot revolve all around Necrozma it killed everything interesting the original had going for it. It feels like it would have been far better as part of a sequel plot, like B2W2, where the original Sun and Moon story remains intact and Ultra Necrozma happens sometime afterward.

Perhaps this could have been the plan, but time constraints or a lack of enough ideas to justify a full sequel lead to it being a modification of the original games. Either way, Sun was up there with Gen 5 as my favorite stories in Pokemon and Ultra Moon was extremely disappointing by comparison.

yknow the vibe I get from this is that they used AI to do all their concept art and then made the game to emulate that aesthetic because this looks almost exactly like what I'd expect an AI to generate when prompted to generate an image for a super duper high graphics OoT remake

I need to clarify that while this art direction gives me AI vibes, I'm not saying that this is what they actually did. I still genuinely hope and largely believe that Nintendo would value their own craftsmanship too much to model their direction off AI. It just looks about what I'd expect from AI.

Like I feel like the aesthetic of this game is exactly what fans of AI art think looks good, despite the lack of actual AI generated assets
