This week Dear Leader said she wanted to work WITH cities, but goes ahead with the steamroller agenda. Lying liars gonna lie - all the time. Don’t care if she can cry on cue.

Urban Potato@urban-potato.bsky.social

Brutal 24 hrs for Alberta's big cities: 1) Last night, the province quietly dropped their directive for Edmonton to reverse its infill regulations and for Calgary to freeze theirs. 2) This AM, the province announced it will be tabling their anti-bike infrastructure legislation this fall.

I love being at October 23 and mtd our #yeg solar panels have produced as much electricity as we have consumed - in our house plus our e-bikes! Last year overall I was 24% to the good...which is enough power to have also powered an electric car for the amount we drove, not that I have one yet.

And no, this does not include heating. Still on gas for that. And yes, of course I still need the grid because - shocker - the sun doesn't shine 24-7-365.

At current results, I make Our Dear Leader ahead by <0.5% on the totality of Q1-4, 6-9. NOT a big mandate despite crafting every question to be confusing leading questions and spending millions of our tax $ to push her desire to win these questions. Over all 9 Qs, it’s about 2% (ie 49-51). #yeg #yyc

#yegbike On Oct 7 I got a reply from YEG projects that the concrete issues on the 113 st and 111 ave MUPs would be rehabilitated within 2 weeks. They have 2 days left. Anyone want to bet that it WILL be done by Wed evening? I’m on the no side, just like separation…

Well, I know it isn’t official but not super impressed with my fellow Albertans. Both turnout and demonizing immigrants. Provincial paramountcy would undo the fabric that has knitted Canada together. Good that we smacked down the separatists and their lowering of the bar (send a message), but…

This is what we need at the provincial and federal level.

For cities with right-wing mayors (or premiers) because progressive parties lose by splitting the vote, the huge election result here in Vancouver was made possible by the agreement between Greens, COPE & OneCity to NOT each run full council slates, and have only one mayor candidate by election day.

This is great. We have a 4+3 going in 2 doors south of us. We will lose our view of west downtown and be more shaded. Would I prefer it built somewhere else? Sure. But only a hypocrite would say we should ban these, making housing and taxes less affordable, and then complain about cost of living.

A reflection on the Alberta zoning bylaw craziness.

Gorgeous night to take the newly-lit rides downtown #yeg to see Our Little Secret at the Citadel. Lovely ride on safe infrastructure, the parking in City Hall parkade is excellent, and the play (one-man musical) was fantastic. Highly recommended!

So Elections Alberta has just asked someone in #yeg to work 7:15 am to 8 pm or later for a day rate that was agreed for a 9 am to 8 pm work shift. Labour law says max 12 hrs unless emergency or approved variance? Should this not be additional compensation? Anyone else being arbitrarily affected?

Hey #alberta, maybe don’t listen to the “character” complainers?? Maybe this is why #yeg re-elected progressive councillors and put the boot to the “lock in the 50s” groups? Just because they’re loud doesn’t mean they represent the majority!

New piece at the Star from Cara and me. Two-thirds of Canadians would prefer governments prioritize making homes less expensive than protecting property values. So why are our mayoral candidates so timid on housing? Read here:

We frequently discuss with friends and family the difference between unsafe and uncomfortable.

Clare Blackwood@clareblackwood.bsky.social

I'm betting that a lot of people who respond to polls saying they feel more unsafe in Toronto now are conflating the feeling of "I am physically unsafe and under threat in my environment" with "there was a homeless man on the sidewalk on my way to the Eaton Centre and I don't want to see that."

This thanksgiving I am thankful to live in a city which is at least trying to do better than many of its peers. Slowing down the war on people outside monster vehicles. Building enough housing so that newer Canadians and young people have a hope of living a decent life. Protecting human rights. #yeg

Building more diverse neighbourhoods that can host local services. Of course we can and should do better. We can go faster. We have no effective control of police, and are constantly having to fight to move this part of Alberta forward

against a regressive provincial regime that seeks to divide with culture wars. We can’t solve homelessness and addictions alone. But thinking back to my youth, I have become a more tolerant and open-minded person and have seen that same change in our municipal government. That’s a good thing.

#yegbike Alright drivers, no excuse for "I didn't see you" (not that there was a legitimate excuse before). Ready to roll, party or no party. Lights from Ikea, not Amazon.

Lights run off USB outlet. 5V. Small battery packs don't keep the voltage for long, but a larger pack can run for a few hours. I could also invest in a specific USB-USB converter to run it off my e-bike control unit but doesn't seem worth it (yet). And I might have to turn to US e-tail. Nope.

Maybe the best part of this thread (which is worth the full read). Non-petrostates are walking away from the import of fossil fuels. Yes, fossils will be traded for decades yet, but it is not the robust growth market it used to be. Every person using active or public transport is reducing dependence

Jenny Chase@solarchase.bsky.social

41. Achieving a low-carbon transition, for most countries, will not look like winning a war or marching while waving flags. It is the ability to say "no thank you, we do not want what you are selling" to the petrostates, and walking (or cycling, or taking a bus, or driving an EV) away.

#yyc wants to condemn Alberta to a future that makes The Handmaids Tale look good - not that anyone will be allowed to read it? They don’t respect having local autonomy?

So Dan Williams (CBC interview this am) thinks people buying houses need to know what will happen around them for DECADES to come. So no zoning changes ever? Blanket or individual lot re-zoning? If I own a SFH with SFH on both sides I can block changes on those forever?

know the province will overrule anything they don’t like. Meantime, the city regresses. And make no mistake, it isn’t about size; when I look at the mansions being built for one family in a rich neighbourhood, I winds who on earth needs so much space? And then to hire maids and gardeners? All while

Ensuring that others can’t move into their exclusive spaces. No to talk apartment buildings. No to small apartment buildings. No to anything that is not SFH. So no to people who don’t have that kind of money. No to people who can’t or don’t drive. It isn’t EXACTLY redlining…

I get it. The small town government is used to all these little towns where change is slow if it happens at all. They lose people, services, and are condemned to a life of driving everywhere for everything all the time. That feels normal to them, and therefore desirable. And no question a chunk

of #yeg #yyc agrees with them. But the nature of cities IS change. That drives the people, the new ideas, the economic drive that doesn’t come from small towns. Requiring cities adopt the stultifying small town ethos is just dumb. So sure, an 18 month “pause” so the UCP can be sure their supporters

Really curious if this holds for home gardens as well as commercial.

Due to **declining soil quality**, nutrients in fruit & vegetables are sharply lower Researchers at Deep Science Ventures found twice the fruit & veg need to be eaten today to get the same level of minerals like potassium, magnesium or copper than 60 yrs ago www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Riding around some of the more "exclusive" areas of #yeg like Parkview and Valleyview, I wonder what the Venn overlap is between true No to the Nine people and restrictive covenant people.

If you support treating immigrants like everyone else, shouldn't you support more affordable housing in your neighborhood and welcome them in? Or is it just theory that they deserve fair treatment as long as they are somewhere else?

And bonus #yegbike news for the NW centre area. The Kingsway crossing lights on the 113 st MUP are done so now seamless-ish to go north from downtown to Blatchford. The asphalt holes on the 111 ave route in front of Timmie's are patched, so maybe also the ones further east. And new concrete median

Extension along 111 Ave at 120 st which is intended to block left turns (NB to WB) and hopefully NB jogs to 120 st through Prince Rupert. Still seems to allow SB left turns to EB and SB jogs into Queen Mary Park area. Recommend EXTREME CAUTION crossing 120 st using the E-W MUP infrastructure.

Beautiful afternoon for a #yegbike ride to Hawrelak Park. Can confirm the pumpkin bread is as delightful as the view and the company. Got questions about my No to the Nine sign and spouse's Get to Know Your City: Ride a Bike sign that led to good discussions!

This is also #alberta. Both rural areas rejecting people and suburban areas refusing to address homeless issues. Push them to #yeg #yyc. Reminds me of Ralph Klein - buy a one-way bus ticket for anyone on welfare. Cruelty defined in Canada’s richest province.

Seriously, watch and share this.

Hey #yeg, should we all pay for storing private property on public property? Should it be limited to “vehicles“ of whatever size regardless of personal or corporate ownership? The U-Haul near my place used to store many trucks on the street. What about rebates for parking on your property?

What is equitable? We don’t pay flat rate for water, sewer, garbage so why should we for street parking? Do we have to build such huge residential streets? We street park maybe 5 days per year. My neighbours routinely have >1 lot worth of personal and commercial vehicles on the street.

Walking around town and the stark contrast of tents on the ground to the cranes in the sky tell us all we need to know about who we prioritize and value.

Don’t forget to check that your mail-in ballot has been processed. If it doesn’t get processed in time, CBC says you can still vote in person on referendum day. You will have a link in your “Special Ballot Request Confirmation” email. #yeg #yyc

The idea that we can recycle our way out of needing new mines and processing is laughable. There is a long stock-building phase which - with 10+ yr life in vehicle and substantial second use potential - means even 100% efficient recycling would be at least 50 yrs from being majority of supply.

AZoMaterials@azom.com

Europe’s EV boom means more batteries to recycle, but second-life use and cross-border moves will delay material recovery. Will timing threaten critical mineral supply targets? 🔋⏳ www.azom.com/news.aspx?ne... #EVs #BatteryRecycling #Sustainability
