A recap: TU Wien rector: “Here at TUW our motto, our belief, our mission is ‘Tech for people!’ and now let’s all welcome prof. Hinton 👏” GH: “Machines will enslave us and all we can do to avoid extinction is convince them they’re our own mothers” TUWR: “And another big clap for Hinton, everybody! 👏”

I’m having a Blade Runner moment. Am I… Am I a replicant? Just because 15 years ago I googled “hyphen endash emdash differences”?

Andy Pavlo@andypavlo.bsky.social

How often abstracts write numeric ranges with an endash (10–20%) instead of a hyphen (10-20%). In 2025, Crossref began posting ranges with Unicode endash instead of LaTeX-style "10--20", so part of the 2025–26 rise is a formatting change. But LLMs make this swap ~80% of the time.

Excuse me for the doomerposting but the fact that this petition has not managed its goal of 75k signatures in 4 months is utterly abysmal. Maybe we truly do not have the strength to affect this decision. #unisretten mein.aufstehn.at/petitions/un...

I have heard at least a couple ideas in this space that could have been a 3-year grant and might be bitter-lessoned to oblivion in a matter of months. Fun!

Switched over 100% of my LLM use to CLMs (via prime-agent fork) because it seemed like such a natural fit. And yes. It just works. Very well. I have some rare problems where the agent will just not continue working, and I have to nudge it. But it mostly just feels like an unlimited context window.

This bloke writes sanctioned Stranger Things slopfic and has the gall to criticise James Joyce, I wish I had half of that self-esteem

Emily Wilson slams Nolan for portraying Odysseus as a guilt-ridden veteran. Wait till she hears of that bloke who turned him into a middle-aged meek-mannered Jew in Ireland

Highly recommend punching those societies' names into the LinkedIn search bar lmao

SCOOP: Top researchers at Columbia, Stanford, and others thought they were elected to elite scientific societies alongside Nobel laureates. The catch? The organizations are a sham. I spent the last month diving deep into a massive academic scam spanning continents, for @nature.com

Well this has to be Royal Tenenbaums, One Two Three (or any classic Billy Wilder really), or Before Sunrise depending on how close is that someone

What's your favorite movie to share with someone who hasn't seen it?

How I would solve age verification (assuming we actually need it) -Yo, Apple/Google/PayPal/whatever -'Sup -Does this person have a bank account/debit/credit card to their name? -Yep looks like it -Fine then they're old enough. Bye -Cheers

As a rule of thumb: Claude-isms are lame, DeepSeek-isms are based. "This is load-bearing" is meh; "This is the crux" feels like having a metaphysics debate with a Benedictine monk in a library out of The Name of the Rose

I wonder how hard it would be to give users a “Nerf this post” panic button that disables quotes/replies and (most importantly) tells algorithmic feeds to make the post _less_ discoverable. Maybe it would help?

One of the worst design aspects of Twitter - which Bluesky has, too - is the ability for anyone to become the Main Character of the day. If your take is disliked by a certain subset of users, it will be elevated to 100-1000× your usual reach (!!!) for a public shaming session. I think that's bad!

Every time this discourse comes up I can’t help thinking of Orson Welles and how he absolutely thrashed Elia Kazan for his support of McCarthy, while still singing his praises as a director

Also, on a stack where you can bring your own PDS, "number of accounts" is a pretty useless metrics. Eurosky offers both its own PDS and @mu.social & the latter has like 10x the users than the former 😅

Elena Rossini ⁂@elenarossini.com

If you're curious about how #WSocial is currently doing - as their MEGA fans (pun intended) boast about the network hosting more accounts than #Eurosky - well well well... a picture is worth a thousand words. 📊 context in the alt text 🙏 thanks to @pds.ls for the info! #WSocialPics #SmokeAndMirrors

Thankfully, in ~6-12 months (for a quite pessimistic prediction) mathematicians should be able to carry out most of their AI-assisted work on open models & this should become a less critical concern :)

Just got it 2nd-hand for a bargain. Love it! Sadly it misses the base and came with a 3rd-party clamp, but I did want to clamp it to my sofa console so no harm done. And I'm no expert but some hints (+ some Google fu/AI ki do + all the scratches 😬) make me suspect it's from the 90s, just like me!

That won’t do much IMHO, any LLM can write a Lean file that superficially resembles what’s in the submission.

Thomas Dietterich@tdietterich.bsky.social

I think problems 1 and 2 will require us to do more careful analysis of arxiv submissions (essentially checking them for correctness), presumably using AI tools. We could require all mathematical work to be formalized in Lean and certified to run without error.

Heartbreaking. During my stint at GU/Chalmers (2020-22) I met brilliant folks from all over the world and it led to some of my best research + life in general. Yet I have a hard time recommending Sweden to anyone w/o an 🇪🇺 passport. (And I heard horror stories already back then)

Tbh a clanker recently wrote for me a parser that handled function arguments by doing setattr(myFunctionCall, f”arg{n}”, arg) and I am pretty sure that is not good code

dax@thdxr.com

now everyone gets to complain about how LLMs don't write good code like they're someone who even knows what that is
