#31DaysofGraves - Day 24 - Contrast Palisado Cemetery, Windsor, Connecticut, USA The original headstone and footstone for Dr. Timothy Mather (d. 1788) and a later marker recognizing military veterans show a contrast in material, style, and content.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 18 - Earth Barnard Cemetery, Sheffield, Massachusetts, USA “Sleep precious dust within thy mother Earth, Till the last trump shall give a nobler Birth, Then rise triumphant from thy bed of Clay, To realms of love and everlasting Day.” Stone for Cynthia Hickok, d.1790.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 15 - Language Precious Blood Cemetery, Woonsocket, Rhode Island, USA Farming families from Quebec started moving to Woonsocket in the mid-1800s to work in the textile mills. In 1900, 60% of the city spoke French.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 13 - Unusual Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, Connecticut, USA Stones for women from this time period usually reference their parents or husband, but Sarah Griswold (d. 1760) is remembered as a “Single Woman”.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 11 - Humorous Aspinwall Cemetery, Putnam, Connecticut, USA Maybe more charming than humorous, but this stone for little Joseph Larned (d. 1750) makes me smile. The carver’s name is unknown, so they have been dubbed the “Killingly Egg Carver” for their distinctive style.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 10 - Missing Ye Antientist Burial Ground, New London, Connecticut, USA The stone for Peter Christophers (d. 1829) and his wife (d. 1791) is missing the start of the inscription, including the wife’s name.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 9 - Lettering Avery-Morgan Burial Ground, Groton, Connecticut, USA Stone for Dorothy Avery, d. 1732. The carver took an innovative approach by merging letters. I especially like how this makes the word “the” one little unit.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 6 - Weather Old Norwichtown Cemetery, Norwich, Connecticut, USA Clouds on the stone for John (d. 1782) and Martha (d. 1787) Durkee and also Dr. Dominic Touzin “who was lost in a hurricane at sea” 1782.

#31DaysofGraves - Day 4 - Entrance Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, Connecticut, USA The cemetery was dedicated in 1854. In 1892, to much local controversy, the elms by the entrance were cut down to build this arch in memory of Charles Henry Mallory, a prominent ship owner.

Yay!!
