Officials recommend voters use ballot drop boxes whenever possible and say that voters intent on mailing their ballots should do so early, to ensure that they are counted in the event of postmark delays at the U.S. Postal Service. Keep up with the latest election news at OregonLive.com/politics

Re: the new flight to Mexico City - there’s some discussion on r/Portland about the international arrivals experience at PDX, and I have two thoughts

a) The internal arrivals facility isn’t great and definitely doesn’t match the quality of every other part of the airport b) Every time I arrive on an international flight at LAX, SEA, DFW or MIA I wish I had arrived at PDX instead, bus and all

I mean if anything the whole measure seems like kind of an assault on representative democracy. We vote for people to actually learn about the budget and make good decisions, an end run around that makes no sense to me.

Who knew that running software that’s 17 years old could be problematic?

Lots of discourse about Bluesky’s growth rates, or lack thereof, meanwhile I’m moderating an Internet forum running on a version of vBulletin that was released in 2009.

Fantastic meal at Bar Nouveau last night. I highly recommend it.

I had dinner recently at Bar Nouveau - solo, which is a departure from my regular practice of eating with friends and/or family. I had a great experience with truly delicious food and excellent service. #portland #barnouveau #bridgetownbites bridgetownbites.com/2026/09/17/s...

*so important*: if you’re voting by mail, assume the USPS will delay because it’s its policy. You can: —put it in drop box —go to counter to watch them postmark in front of you —if you’re dropping it in a mailbox, do it VERY EARLY.

Watching the video for “Learn to Fly” by Foo Fighters and weirdly bothered by what kind of airplane it’s meant to take place on. It’s a single aisle plane and yet the safety card says it’s a 767. On landing it’s clearly a trijet.

Most likely, this comes into effect in Oregon in 2028. However, unless Portland changes its policy and allows single stair buildings to use the same code guide that all other multifamily buildings in the city use, the de facto ban on four story single-stair apartment buildings would remain.

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

The 2027 IBC has been officially published, and it allows single-stair apartment buildings up to four stories! See the new section 1006.3.3.2 codes.iccsafe.org/content/IBC2...

A weird quirk of Portland’s new city charter is that councilors in Districts 3 and 4 will always have an advantage over their colleagues in Districts 1 and 2 if they want to be Mayor, because they won’t have to choose between running for Mayor and running for reelection in the same cycle.

Portland is trying an unusual tack to regulate a proposed Amazon drone base: Classifying it as a "helicopter landing facility." I began asking questions about this yesterday. Today, Amazon canceled an upcoming meeting with Portland permitting officials. djcoregon.com/news/2026/10...

I haven’t even finished this article, but curiosity got the better of me and I so had to watch a vertical microdrama. I can’t even begin to explain how bad it starts, and apparently the episodes before the paywall have the higher production values. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/06/m...

Steve Bannon issues warning to voters if they vote for Democrats in the midterms: “I think you’ll see Bobby Kennedy impeached, I’ll think you see Pete Hegseth impeached. I think you’ll see subpoenas flying every day. They will look to destroy Trump, and we’ll be bogged down for two years.”

Last night an uber driver was telling us about a city in Southern Oregon that only women could even visit. And while every detail he told us was wrong, it did lead me down a rabbit hole of womyn’s lands in Southern Oregon (of which there were once many). sundaylongread.com/2023/12/02/w...
